damn that is sad. I liked Vancouver much better when we were a small, sleepy little town. Thanks Expo 86.

I agree that Vancouver is probably the most beautiful city in the world but the population explosion and resulting problems that accompanied it (housing prices, traffic, crime) have not been worth it. I would love it if the city was the way it was in '78 or pre Expo.

Funny what we forget

Seems to me in 78 False creek was a dead waterway - no living fish and a toxic stew of industrial chemicals spewing into it at an alarming rate!

There are fish now, though i don't think I would want to drink the water. The "creek" is used by many different people in a recreational way...Dragon boats, kayakers etc..... Charming little false creek ferries ply the waters. The waterfront on the most part is accessible and attractive. There is no way Vancouver was going to remain a sleepy little town on the west coast. This is Vancouvers time. Lets all enjoy it.

And if you want a small town feel, move to a small town.... where there is clean air, no traffic and cheaper housing prices... and no jobs, struggling schools and a lack of resources!

Cheers

we'll have to

agree to disagree I guess. I don't know about your info on False Creek either. The water quality there is disgusting with all the squatter boats dumping their shit (literally) overboard.

False Creek was a lot worse during the 70's. I used to moor Time Thief there and the water would stain the paint. There were a number of marinas that had mostly live aboard boats moored and none of them had a holding tank. There was also a steel company, a cooperage and a number of other companys that used False Creek as their sewer.

You didn't row a small boat on the water as you didn't want to risk getting it on you.

Still lost in the '60s
I would not want to go back to where it's illegal for shops to be open on Sunday and you have to submit a written request to buy a bottle of wine.

As someone who was born here and has seen all of those '78 scenes live and in person I think it is a much more vibrant and exciting city now. Sure some things need to be done about traffic, transit, crime and drugs but I am still proud to call the current Vancouver my home.

beautiful?

Oh yeah,we really need all the skids from across the country here, collecting welfare, panhandling and adding "flavour" to our city streets. Sure with growth we will get big city problembs, but we've turned into the mecca of tree hugging flakes, people don't mind their buisiness,we have to worry about the criminals rights, the protesters rights, the welfare recipiants rights, the refugees rights, the goddam rats running around Granville Islands rights, the freakin young offenders(car theif, home invasion, swarming, sky train mugging, bullying, meth freaks)rights. What the feck happened to the tax paying, working persons, people raised in this city,Vancouverites rights, I'd love to jam a pair of Birkin stocks up all theese scumbags ass' during a hot yoga session,in the middle of a poverty rights protest and finish them with a steaming hot double tall ,non fat, decaf, organic Starbucks latte poured on their untrimmed balls/gash. Nice freakin city we have, car theft capital of North America, most leiniant open drug use,we pay for the junkies shooting gallery, now we will be giving out free CRACK. But the Cops have time to search your bags at the fireworks looking for wine or beer WTF?
