I’ll be traveling through the west coast of the USA for a month. My current carrier will do international roaming but it’ll cost me my bunghole and a leg ($180 xtra).

I was thinking of getting a US phone and having my CA phone fwd calls.

Any ideas what US carriers will do 1 month? Is there a better solution?

Pretty sure with forwarding , you will be charged on both phones. There is a company called Public Mobile and for 50 bucks a month ,no contract you get unlimited North America talk/text.
Also , most cell providers have add-ons for long-distance .

Fairly certain about forwarding charges as well. There’s a little known feature on Rogers(the other big providers probably have this too) on Apple and Samsung (guessing most new phones will also have this) called Wifi calling. When enabled, you can make and receive calls/send text messages over wifi anywhere in the world(maybe not China or North Korea) just as if you were at home in Canada for FREE. I still buy local prepaid plans abroad but I’ll pop my Rogers sim in and use it to check messages and make calls for free(to and from Canadian numbers that is.) A fool proof way to avoid roaming is to make sure the wifi calling is enabled on your device BEFORE leaving Canada, then turn on airplane mode when abroad and as long as you have a good enough wifi connection, you’re good to go. This is also useful wherever cell reception is poor, at home or abroad.

I’ve used T-Mobile when I was down there for extended periods. The customer service was excellent and the plans were very competitive.

If your phone is unlocked (if not, your carrier will unlock it for free) just buy a SIM from any GSM US carrier, pop it in and sign up for a 1 month pay as you go plan.
