The American educational system seems to ignore the rest of the world. When I lived in the US, the stupid questions I used to get about 'living in wilderness' were stunning. Canadians and Europeans know lots about what is happening around the globe. So do many of the educated in South America, etc. But in certain countries; Russia, China, the US - the world seems to stop at the border. So no, they don't understand inflation as a global phenomena. No, they don't understand that business interests help drive inflation.

I know I will be slagged for this comment but I have lived in Canada, the US, Africa, Asia and South America so I would possibly know more than those people who have never lived outside their country. Sure everyone has been on vacation but that is not the same thing.
I was in Nee York a few years back with a couple from Saskatchewan. We were taking the subway to go see the Brooklyn bridge. Guy standing next to us overheard them say something about Saskatchewan. He replied he knew where it was, asked us where we going on the subway. Told him the Brooklyn bridge so he showed us where to get off. Was surprised a New Yorker knew where Saskatchewan was.

Several decades ago my brother went down to Vegas. He was telling me he had people convinced that he lived in an igloo and got around by dog team.

Last time I was in Vegas a motel worker asked me about my BC license plate and asked which state that was in. I explained about BC and Canada. Mentioned Vancouver. He blanked out. I mentioned it was about 120 miles north of Seattle. Another blank look.
When I lived back east, while in New York, I told people who asked that I was from Toronto. Never heard of it.

I'd say 50% of Canadians would not know that . And 98% would not that Santa Fe is the capital , while 10% would assume that it's Albuquerque.

While 10% of Canadians will be able to carry on a conversation about American history, politics and geography like an American born . For that you can blame TV, movies, history listens and self interests.

You are pretty hard to miss compare to us with 1/10 of the population and not the first destination when Americans think exotic spot for a vacation .

I skied throughout new England in my youth and we could be 60 miles from the border and friends talking about Canada ( I did not speak English back then) with American people and they were talking assuming almost a wall of ice at the border. On the other hand the avid American skiers wanting a jump start on the season were up in Québec early November and always interested about everything from history to politics. In my mind it's a question of opportunities and interests or self interests to know about your neighboring country.

You must be well above average in the US with your knowledge of Canada because of your regular traveling north of the border and interests in hockey....oh forgot to mention and Canadian women....👍

I rode my Motorcycle around the Ozarks and down the Mississippi, that was interesting, some of those folks were never out of their own County. The town store was ancient with the log bench out front and guys chewing on straws, they were looking me over, a stranger in town. Good thing I was riding a Harley, they looked at my BC plate, west Coast of Canada, meant nothing to them but riding an American bike was good enough to be welcomed. They all tell you the best places to eat and the roads to ride and they ain’t kiddin, excellent food and awesome bars music etc. Hit some very sketchy towns at times but being on the road down there is freakin awesome I love it!

Just a side note.
If your going over 200 miles to get an early start on sking, you are in an above avg wage situation (richer than most). Probally have more education than the public schools in the states. So asking questions about the place and people you are visiting means they want to learn things about your place (Quebec/Canada). In the USA their education is about themselves, not other countries. Our education about the USA is from the media.

Yes also true and talking with American friends Canada is a geography subject when learning the world map in elementary school.

Some were ski bums just like my friends and I. Taking on a whim for a long day ....hit the roads at 5 am , 2 hours of driving , ski the day and drive home for 2 or 3 hours with late afternoon traffic. But like you said more adventurous and above average curious.

Well, unfortunately Canada might be more worldly in attitude, but in politics, the problem is much the same. Nobody puts much effort into looking beyond the immediate. Inflation being a global issue is a great example. You'd never think so if you only listened to disgruntled MP's in our parliament. Whenever they make comparisons too, it is only ever to that one nearby neighbour, as if if that was the only alternative to our own status quo. I would say also doing a spell in Europe was a real revelation. Asia would be too. Not just a matter of better or worse, but it's like switching on a filter that let's you see your own country without a lot of the false assumptions.

I think if skiing is your sport, and you didn't grow up in some resort town like Revelstoke, you're likely in those upper tax brackets anyways, Maybe not "equestrian club" levels of money, but definitely not working poor or worse.

Growing up, we did the "day skier" thing mostly, rare trips to the Okanagan too, but it was always an expensive sport compared to things like soccer. You could afford it then being middle class; today, not likely.

Well unfortunately for you guys it appears that the Trump delay tactics have worked on both the Jack Smith prosecutions. But not to worry. If he loses the election like you figure they can still prosecute him later but as the basis for these trials was mainly political and not criminal I doubt they will really care anymore.

As for the Bragg case.... like most people including the prosecutors apparently Im still trying to figure out exactly what the charge is at this point but whatever it is Im certain that they will find him guilty and it will be overturned on appeal while his polling numbers against Biden will go through the roof like they continue to do through all these prosecutions. Democrats need a Black Swan event to win this it appears. Most Americans appear to feel disdainfully towards what appears would become a Kamala Harris Presidency at the rate Biden is deteriorating.
Anyways....this is for PERBs MSNBC's Lawrence "stop the hammering" ODonnell fans which I am certain on here exist.

Trumps reaction:

This should cause some excitement amongst Trump haters in this board....Garregos believes he will be found guilty and be immediately handcuffed in court and led out and possibly have to debate Biden while wearing an ankle monitor.....GOOD TIMES!! However as a first time offender Marcia Clark does not believe he will serve any jail time...BOOOOOO!

Problem being that judging by past history this will probably increase his lead in the polls even further and dim the future ambitions of President in waiting Harris who...at the rate of mental deterioration Biden is facing become President somewhere in 2025 if he actually wins.
