Yes, that's why fiscal changes (whether it be new spending or tax cuts) should be funded. That's what a deficit is, more money going out (i.e. requires borrowing) vs money coming in. If you are going to have less money coming in, you should fund that with spending cuts rather than pulling out the credit card (so to speak). No one is arguing (at least I'm not) that the US doesn't have large deficits, they do. But you seeing it solely as a taxation issue (i.e. they should tax more), whereas I see it as a spending issue. The reason why I see it as a spending issue is because there is no government (left or right leaning) that can't find a use to spend tax revenue. The only difference, between you and I, you seem to think all spending by gov't is "good" and/or you want gov't to spend more on "things" you want. I believe gov't should only spend on things that are necessary/required. That difference can be viewed as (what a lot of left leaning folk parrot off) tax somehow being about "wealth transfer" - whereas I see taxation as a sort of Faustian bargain, govt's take some of my income, but only as much as is required to pay for those things that are essential for a civil society. The "wealth transfer" crowd just wants more "things" and as is the case with wants, they are limitless.

first off, any idea that you have that "conservative" governments cut spending and tackle deficits is a fallacy. they're just as bad if not worse... well, actually worse. have a look at below... the top debt creators in modern times are predominantly Republicans. it can easily be suggested that the first two be ignored as they were paying for WW1 and WW2. it should be also noted that a handful of these guys racked up these percentages in only one term! including Trump. if Trump had another term and remained consistent the he would have beat Obama while Obama was dealing with the economic meltdown. the GOP never has a problem using vast amounts of cash to prop up big money!



now check out what the current Freedom Caucus wants to do... they just want spending levels to remain at 2022 levels! is that hard core conservative money sense? Democrats ARE willing to raise taxes AND reduce spending to find a path to pay down national debt while the GOP ARE NOT willing to raise taxes which kind of puts them at a big disadvantage is paying down the debt.

aside from that, as soon as one starts with the ideological bent then you've essentially lost the argument because the situation is far more complex then simple slogans... something both parties capitalize on. the US is a mixed economy with socialism supporting free enterprise... both systems do not work on their own.

the complaint with US politics is that too much money is in politics. there certainly isn't any fear of socialism taking over! but lots of arguments for free enterprise having already taken over... thus corrupting the socialism space. and capitalists are the only ones capable of fleeing the US if it all goes to pot.

and why shouldn't every participant in a society have a piece of the american dream? the vast amount of wealth generated in the US is from existing money using existing resources. people in the lower half of wealth will never become a 1%. no matter how hard they work. so what do they get out of it when at any time the money infused political system can ship them off to take some bullet? wealth distribution is indeed getting out of hand in the US... its not an ideological bent. there needs to be incentive for capital to invest in money making and a happy population who feels they are invested in the process. right now... half of the US population get nothing! and all the GOP can do is try and devise ways to bleed another couple of percentage points of cash out of them while feeding the masses by borrowing!

You're arguing a point I never made.

I stated, tax cuts or new expenditures should be funded, and NOT with debt. Meaning, if you cut taxes, you should fund that via expenditure cuts. And if you want to spend more (i.e. new spending) that should also be funded, either via cutting spending somewhere else or funding via taxes. I am saying, generally, debt should not be used, save for maybe extraordinary situations. However, I did NOT claim or state Trump fully funded his tax cuts. I am not stating that this or that party does what my preference is. So stop trying to argue a point I never made.
