What a crazy set up for this course. Opening hole is a 520 yd par 4 with a severe right to left dogleg. There are 2 other par 4s in the opening 6 holes that are right around 500 yards. And the 16th is a 670 yard par 5!!!. Some suggest with a poor drive it will be very difficult to be on in 3. Bubba Watson hit driver / driver in a practice round and was still 60 yards short of the green. The course plays super long compared to actual yardage (which is already challenging) and difficult with fairways that slope severely. I love it.

This is what the US Open should be...not like last year where a ton of players were under par. It's supposed to be the toughest test in golf and I enjoy seeing the winning scores around even or over par. In 07 Angel Cabrera won with an overall score of 5 over! I expect the winning score to be around even par this year.

I expect Tiger to be kicking some a*s again

There is a difference between toughest test and not fair IMO. That is my problem with a lot of the US Opens.
I totally agree with you Hunka. The set up this year is ridiculous, they are taking the driver out of the players bag which make for a very boring week. Every year the U.S. Open tries to out do the previous. How about making it more interesting without putting 5 bunkers on the first damn hole surrounding the green. If Tiger plays his 3 and 5wds winning his 15th major should not be a problem.

If he starts swinging that driver it's going to be a long weekend. I'm looking forward to watching the first 2 day pairing of Tiger, Phil and Bubba.

I remember the 2004 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. The year Retief Goosen won. The course was really unfair because the greens were so baked. That some of the players were putting balls right off the green. It was fun to watch but I'm sure not very fun for the players.

Go Phil!!!

I know some of these guys hit their 3 wood 300+ yards but not on this course with the heavier air and uphill tee shots. If the strategy is to leave the driver in the bag and be constantly left with 200+ yard approaches on the longer par 4s, their short game better be spot on because these guys are going to be stuck with a chip and a putt if they manage to avoid the traps around the green.

The way the course is set up the winner will probably score no higher then -1. This is a major you will not see players taking the the normal chances as they do in normal tournaments. I've been watching practice rounds all week and the driver is no where to be found. I wouldn't be surprised to see a guy like Matt Kuchar who hits plenty of fairways and greens in the final pairings on Sunday.

Tiger's looking much better and if he is on he will be tough to beat. However I would love to see Bubba win the second leg of the grand slam.

The course is insane. Approach shots will be nearly impossible on some holes. Whoever controls their shots the best and putts the best takes it. Not sure that's Tiger (he got ass-kicked on this course the last time), but if he gets hot on the greens, watch out.

I also remember that US Open and damn did the PGA screw up that tournament...the greens were too closely mowed and they also stessed the greens by not watering them...after the first round they resorted to watering the greens with a firehose between groups on certain greens as no player could make a ball stay on the green with even a wedge.

I plan to play a round on saturday and I will watch the final round on sunday.....go Tiger....if he plays as well as his last tournament he gets his 15th major.

I think the USGA might have been a little embarrassed that -16 was the winning score in last years U.S. Open. So they are going to make it as hard as possible this year.

its going to be very interesting....
longest hole ever... i think it is 675 or something insane.... narrow , small greens , ouch !!!!
if tigers hitting fairways and putting lights out , he will be in the final 4 grouping ,
Steve Strickers short game and putting ? hmmmm
I think Rory is going to miss the final cut.......
a real hard one to pick.....accuracy will be the game.

Congressional's not that easy, but it was pelted with rain in the days leading up to the Open, I believe. Turned the greens into dartboards. That, and McIlroy was just plain lights out.

Phil really needs to go... 6 over through 14. He recovered at the Masters after a poor start and ended up in contention but this isn't the Masters. Typically, the US Open does not reward aggressive play and that is how Phil and Rory normally get it done.

Loved watching FIGJAM hack it all over the place - right from his first tee shot.

I was at the Congressional last year watching the third round. The course was really tough compared to other well known courses like the Pebble Beach where I played before. The only thing that made the course little easy was that the green was much less dry than the usual US open since it rained a lot a week before the tournament.

I think the USGA might have been a little embarrassed that -16 was the winning score in last years U.S. Open. So they are going to make it as hard as possible this year.

I'd like to thank Tiger for making this thing interesting. Just as it looked like this might be another Tiger cake walk he spots the field five shots today (might be all part of his master plan). This is great because tomorrow is going to be anyone's game and if Tiger wants to win this thing he will have to play the round of his life.

I want that nerdy teenager to win. That would be a story.
It would be great for golf, a 17 year old that looks like he couldn't do 10 pushups in a row to save his life.
