How common or uncommon is it for MP's and providers to accept US currency? Do they provide a reasonable exchange rate, or do they try to come out significantly ahead on the transaction?

I'm particularly interested in what the practice is in Vancouver.

Thanks

Do US providers accept Canadian currency?

Many US businesses close to the Canadian border accept Canadian dollars. Once inside the US by about 50 miles or so it is harder to find a business that will take anything but US money.

Most providers accept US dollars (who wouldn't) but they are not banks so the exchange rate is going to vary. Best bet exchange your US funds to CDN at a financial institution.

Please, Please,

Change your money before going in to see someone(especially at an agency), it's easier all around for the sp and her support staff. What with all the fluctuations, someone(usually me) is going lose out on their hard earned money otherwise.

I haven't used a Canadian bank for years for currency exchange. I always had to pay a fee, then I found Vancouver Bullion (not sure of this spelling--should I PM dittman?) . Their rates were always competitive. Recently I have been using a Credit Union ATM at Cambie and King Edward. Their rate beats others by about $1.25 per hundred on average. Better than Scotia, RB, CIBC, and otheres I have compared them with. Not sure though, you might need ATM card to be tied into a credit union like mine. Exchanging at the border or at a bank in the US has proven to be by far the worst rate. I also use credit card whenever I can at places like BR and Hot Springs.

Actually, quite a few north Seattle motels (100 miles from the border) take $CDN, and even advertise their favorable conversion rates on their signboards. Of course, this is not standard, but it's also not unheard of.

When Washigton merges with Canada, all this will be a thing of the past.

North America is the most painfull place to exchange money in the Pacific Rim. Everywhere else, there are dozens of exchange outlet competing for the opportunity to change your money.

Yes, it definitely will be nice to have a single, uniform currency throughout North America.

But won't it bother many of you Americans to give up your currency and instead use bills that have a picture of the Queen on the front and that come in various colours? :D :D

Europe is worse. I spent a week in France and then fly into London Heathrow. I needed a bus to get to my hotel. After waiting 40 minutes the bus final arrived (it was 2 in the morning). The driver said that will be 2 pounds, I have euros how about 5 euros. No he said I need pounds. I will give you 10 fucking euros just take me to my hotel. Get off my fucking bus and come back when you have pounds, this is Britain you know.
