The only export they really can stop is raw logs that is what the US has been after from the beginning.

Unfortunately, allot of these problem come down to many years of lazy companies not diversifying their exports. It’s just too easy to stick the stuff on a US bound truck, as opposed to arranging a container shipment to parts further afield. If they had diversified export possibilities they could now say right US, we will send our goods to somewhere else. Watch their house prices soar. .

This is similar to what has happened to the ranchers. They are finally now going about slaughtering their own cattle and not going to export live animals down to the US. The US will lose jobs, but who cares.

We also do not value manufacturing in general. People talk about the booming economy in the Okanogan. But if you look what they are raving about, it’s that they are ripping up orchards and putting in condos. Oh yes that’s an economy going places. This isn't just a Canadian problem; it’s also in the US. We are living in one of the most BS economies ever. Flipping land and making "products" which are some latest fad of a financial instrument(paper with ink on it) make me laugh. People park their house next to a "messy" and "noisy" factory, and complain till it moves away. Well they are gone now, they are well out of view in China.

The US has proven to us and many other countries that agreements mean very little to them. We should rip up nafta, mainly because it gives them power over our resources. As time goes on this is going to be the Achilles heal of the US economy, they are nothing without tons of energy to grease their wheels. Business will move to countries which have the energy to sustain it.

If Canada wants to take a page for the US handbook and play dirty now is the perfect time to screw the US for their treatment of us in the softwood dispute.

With the sheer number of homes destroyed by hurricane Katrina the US is going to need massive amounts of wood for rebuilding. Time to slap some export duties on our softwood, demand will be high, they will have no choice but to pay premium prices.

The US has lost 1/4 of its oil production ability and 1/10 of its refining ability, perfect time to slap some export duties on our oil exports.

Though amoral, I admire your Machiavellian sensibilities. Good call!!!

But I have to agree with LD on many fronts. The only obvious thing for Canada to do is get completely out of NAFTA first. That way, the resource-rich western provinces will really benefit because Ontario will not be the driving force behind a nation-wide agreement.

smackyo......you too need to control your glee.......I am not sure how anyone can be joyful about a person who passes away because their oxygen tank ran out when no one was able to replenish their tank....

If you somehow think this is payback for the softwood lumber dispute....then you are one very sick dude.

WTO appeal ruling opens door for Canada to retaliate against U.S. on softwood

Its reassuring to see that Canada is taking the correct route in disputing this bullshit. This as of yesterday:

VANCOUVER (CP) - The latest World Trade Organization softwood lumber ruling opens the door for Canada to retaliate against the United States, the Department of International Trade said Monday.

Trade officials said the WTO appellate body has upheld Canada's position that U.S. procedures used to establish countervailing duties on Canadian softwood lumber imports are inconsistent with trade organization's rules.

Get the whole story here

No we are not joyfull, but by the way the hurricane was handled wasn't by canadians.
And for your info the trade ruling was by a panel of 3 americans and 2 canadians. You made the ruling yourselves, and now bitch, bitch at the 3 americans.
Sick, talk to the powers in LA that had their heads in the sand.
