Does anyone know where I can get my rogers cell phone unlocked? I heard that there are other places other than Rogers who can do this and charge alot less. Also has anyone had service with both Rogers and Fido, if so how did they compare? I've been with Rogers for years but I'm thinking of switching, however I've heard that Fido doesn't always have the best reception. Thanks!

yup...if you go to nightmarket in richmond on friday sat or sunday nights, there are a couple vendors that do it for pretty cheap. i got mine unlocked by the "fonebooth" vendor and they threw in a free flash software thingy.

What is unlocking a cellphone? What does it do and why?

My understanding is that the phones are locked so that they can only be used with certain service providers.

Cell phone purchases are subsidized by the cell companies and the end price are likely also affected by the volume of phones purchased by the cell service provider for retail sale.

This can prevent people from say buying the cheaper phones from a large company and then hooking it up to a cheaper service (ie buying from Rogers and then going to Fido).

All the phones from each company are basically the same, its just programming and locking that differ.

(that's my understanding of the biz, so don't shoot me down if I'm wrong)

I found that Fido only worked in the lower mainland, and alot of calls got dropped in parkades, malls, etc. The reception wasnt that great at the best of times, the sound had a two tin cans and some string quality. Also, when I told them I was leaving, they had me on the phone for 10 minutes, talking to 3 different people, trying to change my mind. When they realized I was going to go, they got kinda bitchy with me. I wasn't impressed with that.

Wow, i seem to be in the minority on this one, i used to be with Clearnet until they got bought out by telus, and later on i switched to Fido. I am still using the old Nokia 3390 and havent had any problems with them, my brother recently upgraded to a newer phone but started experiencing bad reception, my father on the other hand has problems getting into his mailbox (but i am still not sure if its because he is a little technophobe or because he just has bad luck with Fido.)

Oh wait i do have one problem, and just a nitpick really. I used to get bills mailed to me, but they would always arive on the 7-9th of the month but by that time i was already receiving text messages saying that my account was overdue. So i just switched to online biling instead. That way i would know right away and i could pay it right away without getting those annoying little messages telling me that my account was overdue.

The only thing I hate about Rogers is you can't scratch your ass with them unless you renew your contract for two years.

if you were to stick with Rogers I would suggest upgrading your phone that included their new "850" GSM band. The 1.9 band is the standard (which Fido also uses) but Rogers has both 850 and 1.9 for the phone to "switch" between depending on your location. The 850 is great in buildings, malls, places where your cell normally might have problems. I've used all the providers and the reception at Rogers is unbeatable. But you just can't beat the cityfido plan, too bad the reception sucks and you get more fast busy than actual calls. PM me if you need any more info.
