Unlocking an I-phone to switch providers

I want to switch my i-phone from Rogers to Bell. Rogers is the devil and I am done with their bullshit.

How do I unlock it? I found a dude on craigslist who says he will do it for $15. Sketchy? or ???

It's fairly easy to jailbreak one of those if you have the proper software and the know how. I've never done it to a iPhone but it isn't that difficult a process. I imagine lots of people out there know how, and as such wouldn't be able to charge much at all for it.

With that being said, the newly arriving iPhone 3Gs's are supposedly coming with a fix to that problem, and the traditional jailbreaking methods don't work. There are always workarounds though....

There are two types of incompatible phones and phone systems, GSM and CDMA. Rogers and Fido use the GSM phones/system. I don't know what type of phone/system Bell uses but I would be interested in hearing. If Bell and Rogers don't use the same system I expect you will not be able to use your phone with the Bell system. Alternatively the iPhone may be special and able to work on both systems.

There is a new service that may be offering better deals than the older services in Canada. I understand we have been saddled with the most expensive services in the world. The new service is called Global Live. Has anyone checked it out?

There is a new system coming out soon that is supposed to replace the CDMA system. I would have doubts about taking a contract with a CDMA service at this point.

Bell now has a hybrid system, It's called HSPA and can handle the iPhone.

You need to Jailbreak your phone before you can do the softunlock with it.

Check again. This used to be the case back when they were purely a CDMA provider because it was difficult to transfer the phones anyway (not impossible, but enough of a hassle that few people would have done it anyway), but now that they have their new HSPA (GSM-based) network up and running, any unlocked phone should be able to take a Bell SIM card and be up and running on their network in no time.

This is true, but Bell (and Telus) both offer more than just CDMA service now. Their HSPA network went live at the beginning of November. I've been contemplating switching myself, but I want to see how this WIND Mobile situation shakes out first. Their data plan looks awesome and I'm usually in Edmonton, Calgary, or Toronto anyway, so it might make sense for me to switch if I can bring a good unlocked phone onto their network.

Bell and Telus now have HSPA which is "3.5G", or the stepping stone to the LTE platform. Bell and Telus both now sell the iPhone as well as just Rodgers.

As far as I'm aware yes you should be able to take a Bell or Telus SIM card and pop it into a Rodgers branded iPhone and it should work.

I'm also interested in WIND. They have some good plans available!

Well, the iPhone is sold carrier-locked, so you can't just swap SIM cards unless you bought an unlocked model off-contract, but yes, after carrier-unlocking the phone, it will work with just a SIM swap.

Six months ago i switched my rogers plan from the iphone to a regular phone for a family member, so it is not, technically, a rogers iphone or working on any carrier right now.

So I'm a bit confused. what is the difference between unlocking it and jailbreaking it? I have tons of APPS and MUSIC i paid for and downloaded. Will i lose it all?

Did you buy the iPhone from Rogers or a Rogers retailer? Whether or not you switched the plan is irrelevent. Unless you bought an unlocked phone to begin with, it's carrier locked.

Jailbreaking only removes the restriction on running "unsigned code", basically apps that aren't from the app store. Unlocking it means removing the carrier restriction. Both should be fairly easy these days. You might lose your apps though, hopefully someone else can clarify.

It doesn't matter if you don't tell them where it's from. The phone has an ESN which is carrier locked in Canada. Telus and Bell do not alow phones that are not pre-registered in their data base to be activated on their systems.
