I have a blackberry that I would like to use with my Telus phone, the only thing is that its locked to Rogers. Does anyone know of a place or anything I can take it into in Vancouver? Better yet, anyone know how I can unlock it?? I dont mind having to pay....

First question is:

Does the Blackberry have a SIM Card?

Is it a Telus model?

Let me know, i got a guy that i get all my phones from.

Online ;)
If it's a Roger's locked blackberry then it'll certainly have a sim card but to my knowledge the Rogers branded units do no have CDMA capability and Telus is not permitted to roam onto the Rogers GSM.

I will agree with that, Rogers is a Sim/GSM network and Telus is a CDMA network and you can't put GSM on the Telus network.

GSM vs CDMA

There was news not long ago that Telus will be moving to the more internationally accepted platform using GSM.... Hurray! I just hope SIM cards will be interchangeable in the future.

And on another note, were you guys aware that there is now spying software available out there that I believe will allow somebody to unlock and view your call history and deleted items on your SIM card... ugh!

To any of you who aren't aware - tigerdirect.ca is a great place for computer and related stuff, including unlocked cel phones. I plan on getting a nokia there eventually. But, best to confirms rates etc. with the company you plan to use ahead of purchasing. Rogers has some very clever catches in their plans, especially for the more hi-tech phones.

I'm not sure I get what you mean by 'catches'.
Like..? Can you give me an example so I know what to look for?

Thanks! :)

Also.. quick question..

If anyone has experienced using any of the iPAQ mobile devices...

I'm curious about the difference in comparison to Blackberry's?

The iPAQ's seem to offer very similar features as the BB do,
so are there any major, valid reasons (other than hype ;) )
why the Blackberry devices seems so much more popular..??

(btw - it would be great to have a dedicated section in this forum for all this tech talk...
I know I have TONS of questions to which I'm sure a few of you could easily provide answers & feedback....
meh. just a thought. ;) oh well..)

Hi Miss Bijou,

So tricky the catches appear to be they have now disappeared! I received a brochure in the mail from Rogers regarding their 'Vision' plan, which is for the new, hi-tech, smart phones like Nokia N95 & SE K850i. These work on 3g/HDSPA networks and are truer world phones.

The plan was $7/month unlimited internet/data, which is pretty damn good, but... there was fine print that said people with Blackberries and other similar phones would have to pay for data 'per use'!

Also 'tethering' would be charged at some many dollars per kb (I can't find this info now as at rogers.com it all of a sudden seems to have disappeared or gotten well buried).

You can google rogers vision, or rogers vision $7 and you will find some forums where others obviously saw similar info I did, but it is interesting how it seems to be gone from rogers, where all the info now is vague and the plan is $25/month on special offer.

As I want to buy an unlocked phone from tigerdirect.ca eventually (best price in Canada for many techie things - I have gotten all my last hard drives from them) I would certainly have to call Rogers 1st to see exactly what I would be paying, and even if the phone would work with 'vision'. But the cool thing about the Nokia N95 & N82 is that they are also wifi, so even if I just kept my current cel plan, poppled in my current sim card, the phone should work just fine on GSM, and where ever there is wireless interenet the phone would just connect, and not data fees! So that's cool.

Sorry if this was kind of long and in-coherent.

Good idea about having a techie section here too - though there are many great forums for just about everything online already.

the bb is really popular because its connectivity feature... its a special email software that works perfectly... while the ipaq is more of a mini computer doing organization and stuff.. so email vs computer
