Goodbye, Community... :(

Black Monday bloodbath: More network series than usual get the axe
Community, The Michael J. Fox show, X-Factor all gone off the fall schedule
By Alex Strachan, Postmedia News May 12, 2014

Greendale Community College has closed it doors for the last time.

The cult comedy Community is one of an unprecedented 38 network comedies and dramas to be cancelled, now that the fall season U.S. network announcements are officially underway in New York.

The bloodletting didn’t end there: The X Factor is now officially DOA and The Neighbors have moved out for good.

The filmed-in-Vancouver sci-fi thriller Almost Human is completely dead, and not even Robin Williams could save The Crazy Ones.

Michael J. Fox couldn’t save his own show, The Michael J. Fox Show, and not even Jonathan Rhys Meyers could breathe life into Dracula.

Black Monday cast a dark cloud over what is meant to be a week of hope and optimism, as dozens of new series vie to become the next Grey’s Anatomy or Big Bang Theory.

Inevitably, though, there are casualties. And for whatever reason — a fractious advertising market, continuing audience defection to the premium specialty channels and serious competition from online streaming sites like Netflix and, new to the U.S., Amazon Prime and AOL — the bubble burst on more on-the-bubble shows than usual.

The week’s casualties include such high-profile, heavily hyped — and costly to make — serialized dramas as Crisis, Hostages, Intelligence and Believe, which was conceived by Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuaron, who also directed the pilot episode. J.J. Abrams’ once-promising post-apocalyptic drama Revolution, starring Winnipeg-born, Vancouver-trained Tracy Spiridakos, was cancelled after just two seasons.

One of unintended consequences of so many cancellations is that more new series than usual will vie for viewers’ attention in the fall.

There were some surprise renewals. Hannibal will return, even though there was speculation that its middling numbers and relentless violence — for a mainstream network series — would be its undoing.

And Parks and Recreation, considered to be in the same category as Community — critical acclaim, a devoted fan following but less-than-stellar numbers — will return, albeit in midseason, with a shortened, likely-to-be-last season.

Here’s a brief look at the cancelled (or already cancelled) series. The fall programming announcements continue through Thursday:

I was hoping Community would get to its 6 seasons and a movie mandate but not surprised it was cancelled as this season was outright terrible at times with only one or two episodes producing any significant laughs from me (even the GI Joe one was lackluster). Of the rest of the shows on that list. Suburgatory was the only show I enjoyed. The others sucked or I didn't see.

Ray Donovan is an HBO series that they have in invested lots of $ in. Being cable it doesn't have the same issues as MM's list which are all regular network programming.

Ray Donovan is on my PVR and I never miss an episode :thumb:

It could have netflix potential even if Harmon isn't in board..

I guess all those shows will get a new life in syndication.

Guess the discovery channel will now bring out. Crap in a bucket. A show about people crapping in buckets. The the history channel can bring out a show crap in a bucket a week later.
I maintain that somewhere there ought to be a "Shit You Can't Believe We Can Get People to Watch, But We Can!" network.

Believe was basically the exact storyline of Kiefer Sutherland tv show Touch that was also cancelled a couple years ago, changing a few details clearly didn't help in this case.
Trophy wife I found entertaining
Rake was also a good one. Comedy about an alcoholic lawyer that fucks escorts and has a gambling problem, that I can relate to!

Too bad about 'Almost Human'. I enjoyed that show.

I think 'Trophy Wife' had potential.
Trophy Wife totally had legs. The critics loved it and for a rookie season, the viewership was reasonable. The "show-stopper" was the expensive cast. It always comes down to $$$ with show-biz (any business for that matter.)

Why do shows like Survivor survive (sorry fans, but could sit through more than 2 minutes of these "reality shows" before having the urge to drop a 10 Megaton device on the island)? It's because they have a relatively cheap production cost, and a remarkably large regular viewing audience (like 9 Million viewers!) Go figure. The "log-burning-in-the-fireplace" broadcast doesn't cost much less and I know it's on during the Christmas season in our household. :)

Goodbye, Revolution. I will be sad to see this one go. Last night's finale was pretty solid though and fairly satisfactory considering it is now the series finale and not just a season finale.

never heard any of the shows mentioned as I've cut down my TV viewing to almost nil.
just sports and the 11oclock news for me and I doubt they'd be cancelled anytime soon.

I've heard of only two shows on that list and never watch a second of either one but I wouldn't miss a second of survivor.

I thoroughly enjoy Falling Skies as well. Except, I've been watching that on SPACE, so I'm one or two seasons behind...
