My Sony won't turn on so i had a repair person (notice i didn't say men?) up today to have a look. He plays with a few buttons looks at the back and then turns to me and says "you need a new power supply and (something else)." He didn't check under the hood, kick the tires, or anything. Is this guy shittin' me? Can he tell whats wrong with my TV by looking at it? Are TV repair people psychic? Hes going to call me tomorrow and give me a price on the cost of parts. What do ya think should i get a second opinion or thats the way we repair TVs these days?

Now i have to watch TV in my bedroom on my 20 inch. Ughhgh!!! :( --- Kev

Most tv guys (or gals) know their stuff, like massagegirl said, alot of tv's are disposable, if it's older than five years it's probably not worth fixing. It might not hurt getting a second opinion if you think it's worth it.

Sony

The old trinitron Sony ususally died out after about 10 years. I've 3 friends who had the same problem (sound but no picture). One of them can see picture after turning the thing on for like 15 mins. and none of them were able to get it fixed for reasonable price.

but if your's didn't even have the sound and no power, probably you just need to replace the power supply.

See what price he quotes you, and ask him if he guarantees his work. Then see if you want to pay that much, or whether you think a new one is a better deal.

If he didn't take the back off the TV, he is full of it. It could just be a fuse, which are not accessible from the outside. I would get a second opinion, maybe that guy winslow suggested. In all cases you have to take the back off and put a VOM meter on it to see what has failed. TV and or appliance repair people are notorious for ripping people off, so be careful.

Shotty Tubes

Most Sonys built in the early nineties have cheap picture tubes that die after 5-7 yrs (basically Korean or Taiwanese built tubes). It is true also that this guy is trying to rip you off without examining and testing the internal circuitry. Most 90's built Sonys also suffer from cold solder joints, that explains why they won't come on (sound but no picture). I know because I have a friend who has fixed quite a few of them. The proper technician will dismantle each component separately and test individually (power supply, tuner, etc, etc). So, get a second opinion; it will makes a difference.

Yes it is like looking at a computer and telling that it needs a new power supply. Basic electronics. :)

I own a 36" Sony XBR 400 HDTV Ready which i purchased from Future Shop about 4 years ago. Replacement cost would be close to $3500 so its worth fixin'. I also have the new HDTV DVR box from Shaw pumping through 5.1 home theater speakers. HDTV is super cool. One day we'll get more channels.

Day 0) I call the repair shop to ask if someone could come over that day. (Sunday) Hes says "no i have other calls to make. " I say fine "how about tomorrow?" Hes says "tomorrow will work."

Day 1) Its actually in my first post, however this techie has magical eyes and can tell by looking at my TV that it needs a new power supply and some other do dad and he doesn't have the parts with him but he'll call me tomorrow morning to tell me the bad news.

Day 2) He doesn't call in the morning like he said so i called him at 1:00pm. He wasn't there so i left a message. He calls back at 1:30pm and tells me the parts won't be in until Thursday and they'll set me back $250 plus tax and labour. Ughhh i'm thinking. I wanted to record UEFA Champion League soccer on TSN during the day so i could watch it at night. NOT!!!!

Day 3) More soccer games on TSN i'll miss, but i'm going to see Sin City with the boys so all is not lost.

Day 4) Well we'll see what transpires. My fingers are crossed all will go well. --- Kev

Brighouse TV in Richmond is good,I've had work done to several over the last 15 years and they have always been good and upfront about what was wrong, going as far as giving you a written diagnostic and your old parts back(I,ve checked the part numbers,)Turn around was about 3-4 days and I've never spent more than $150 bucks from anything from power supplys to misc parts and labour ,And thats not a SHILL,hahhahhaha :D

Day 4) ...has come and gone and my TV is still not fixed. Turns out it wasn't the power supply after all. Now magic eyes says he has to take the TV back to the shop and it'll probably cost closer to $500. Thats when i started laughing. Its just gets better. He also informs me if Sony doesn't have the part in stock my TV could be out of action for a couple of weeks. How does he now this stuff without first looking in to it? To funny. I hope magic eyes has a friend because my TV weighs 250 pounds so moving it is a chore. --- Kev
