The certainty of being on the side of righteousness seems to give some on the left free reign to insult and demean anyone who disagrees with them, and excuse any acts of violence, intolerance and criminality.

Portland is a good example. So is Seattle. The tolerance of the left seems to apply to anything that includes how someone wants to identify sexually, drug addiction (even when accompanied by crime), the homeless, even when it’s by choice, blatant criminality like looting, and property destruction, assaults on police, and just about anything someone can claim to be offended by, but there is total intolerance of anyone who may have a differing political viewpoint.

It’s easy to see why polling is often inaccurate, because many people won’t dare voice an opinion that might get them assaulted, not served at a restaurant, attacked, have their property damaged or stolen, or get them bullied, or even fired, by the real totalitarians.

I would consider myself centrist or center-left, but the bold describes how I feel these days very accurately. I would like to vote for policies rather than individuals. The political sideshow is a giant distraction for things that actually matter.

FWIW it's not uniquely a leftist trait. When Obama was in charge the right were being similarly prone to hysteria and hyperbole. And they also tolerate a lot more crossing of the line, criminally speaking, from anyone they ideologically agree with.

The problem is as much polarisation in general as anything, regardless of left vs. right. Despite the electorate being split down the middle they'd rather engage in a vicious ideological tug of war than find a middle ground.

Edit to add: The current situation certainly has been exacerbated by Trump's inability to provide any meaningfully unifying or conciliatory message. He seems to think he has a responsibility to those who voted for him and no one else.

I have to call this as I see it; the left has gotten markedly more militant and physically aggressive. While, yes, both sides have a hard time pointing out their own general misdeeds and hypocrisies, it is a stretch at best to say that the right is anywhere nearly as aggressive as the left. Eric Holder defined the current strategy during a campaign endorsement for Stacy Abrams and her governor run in 2018.

As you stated, it is the more left leaning cities that are experiencing this rash of violence all the while the left leadership in Congress is simply saying it doesn't exist.
