Hey guys,

So this morning I woke up to a message on my computer saying I was in violation of downloading/streaming music and or child porn. I had the option of payin a fine and it would go away. I googled it on my phone and it turns out it's a Trojan virus. I removed it (YouTube vids and awesome tutorials online). My question is, since I've never personally had to deal with a Trojan before, should I tell the police or any "online investigators" about this or is it just a thing where I just let it be? And that since people already know about it there's not much more that can be done?

Thanks!

If you are with Shaw they have an email address to send your "report Spam" info.

Perhaps your own anti virus and firewall is not up to snuff?

IMHO Norton and MacAfee are not worth it and I have received viruses and Trojans with both of those companies.

Only one I found that actually worked 100% was Panda from Germany. I got the low down from a major Newspaper's I T guy and he said it was the only one they depended upon. I was using Norton at the time and he contacted me to tell me I had attempted to send them a virus even though my virus definition files were 100% up to date.

The problem with anti-virus software is that they cant detect what they don't know exists. And with virus, trojans, malware, and spyware all using everything from heuristics to root kits finding them isnt always easy.

Some people will swear by this anti-virus software of this other software. They may be great today, but they might not detect the big thing that is coming tomorrow. Behaviour and what you install (or let your computer install) is probably the best line of defence.

Example: Went to a website and it is telling you that you need to upgrade your flash? don't follow the provided link, get it straight from adobe.

I used to trust Norton years ago, until their home versions became so bloated. Today i have certain programs that i use when suspecting that i've caught something, but it really comes down to behaviour and TNO (trust no one) attitude when it comes to programs, utilities online. Even the so called best programs miss things and at times they even have false positives and screw something up on your computer.

I just reformat my hard drive if I get a bunch of crap on it. Any computer i have valuable info on doesn't get used for Internet searches.

What's a virus?
What's a Trojan Horse

PS I am a Mac user :)
Being a Mac user like yourself, do you ever read what the content is for their most recent updates?

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5501

There is a lot of new security protection built into the past few updates. Touch wood we don't have to go out and buy Anti Virus programs and that Apple is building it into the OS. Being so protective of their code this also prevents having to share the information with all the Anti Virus companies.

Macs don't get viruses because they don't exist outside of the US where all the people who write viruses live.

Yes I do but it doesn't change the point I was trying to make.
