GWB is hunting down terrorists to kill them before they the kill Americans. It's about time society in general caught parasites like this before they kill innocent people, regardless of age. You see his scumbag lawyer is already positioning with the "he was not a violent man" statement. Makes me vomit all around. We need to get these people off the planet, not in jail, period.

LK - I feel sorry for the guy...he stopped taking his medication and that is what made him do it. He was not a violent person; he carried a gun because it looked good in his pocket.

As a passionate conservative, I support putting this guy back on his medication.....

then marching him outside a blowing his fucking head off.

A society deserves all the criminals it gets

Is it any wonder that antisocial behavior increase in direct proportion to declining social institutions?

American literacy rate and education standards are in decline. The standard of living for about 80% of the working class is in decline, social programs are next to non existent. Homelessness & disparity have increased. Since a huge segment of your population are increasingly marginalized don’t be so surprised about hearing how bad your crime rate is.

The distribution of wealth and political will being what it is has created the circumstances of a high crime rate. It’s amazing how much the rich are getting away with down there at the expense of everyone else yet nothing is heard about that in your media.

Rather, we hear how sensationally bad the crime is down there, and that everyone should be scared and that you must support GWB and the local gun toting swat teams.

Fear is being used to control a society to support the social/economic structure that benefits the financial and industrial elite ONLY.

That truly is tragic

schizophrenics should either be locked up or agree to supervised drug management to stay out in society.

we have laws that impinge upon our rights for our safety: speeding laws, helmet laws, seatbelt laws etc ... and no one screams discimination -- so there has to be more money for supervision of mandatory drug treatment one way or another passed into law.

here in BC they recently caught a guy who was beheading cats in Comox/Courtenay and it turns out that he is schizophrenic, living in a group home and wasn't taking his meds. bad enough he was killing innocent kitties, but what was stopping him from starting in on kiddies next?

as much as i sympathize for any group with problems, there are two who should be locked up indefinitely: schizophrenics and pedophiles ... if the first group doesn't want to take their meds, it is only the second group that will be harmed ...

Well, two things. Gotsome2004, I understand you're in Winnipeg, but if you were familiar with what's going on in Vancouver right about now, you would see that this is not limited to the U.S. and the U.S. under Bush. I didn't mean it to come across as any type of political statement against Bush or America, it was just this morning's example. Monday morning's could be Toronto for all we know. I only referenced GWB as I'm suggesting that the proactive way in which he wishes to rub out terrorists before they actually do harm should be applied to the general population. They only the catch the civilians AFTER they've done their damage, and in many cases they're repeat offenders.

And LG, pedophiles should not be locked up indefinitely, they should be executed. My opinion differs on that one...

Gotsome….you obviously do not understand the US political system. It is a States responsibility for most of the social institutions you refer to, which includes education. You and the rest of your far left cronies continue to blame W for everything that ever happen in the last 30 years.

We are in agreement that our social institutions have failed. It has been the domain of the left and even the far left to run these institutions for decades. They have done a pathetic job. It has only been in the last 10 years we have seen an emergence of the conservatives. We took the house in 1992, the senate in 1996 (I think) and the presidency in 2000. Prior to that the liberals were in complete control. Many states still have DEMS in control, but thankfully their power is slipping fast. So give us our opportunity to turn things around. Once 30 years have past (roughly the length of time the DEMS had control) we can compare records and I am convinced the conservatives will have done a much better job.

A good gauge of how a country is doing in the eyes of the rest of the world is to see the level of immigration. If you looked up the stats, I am sure you would find immigration to the US is far greater than it is to Canada. If that stat is true, what would that tell you? It tells me that immigrants believe they have a better opportunity to be successful (however they define that) in the US.

Don't think so --- I have faith in the good sense of the American people. When they get tired of spending their taxes feeding the military machine, get fed up with the religious right interfering with their daily lives, and see through the fear-mongering interfering with their civil liberties, they will find a common-sense alternative. I still think that in thirty years, they will look back on this administration as an aberration and as the darkest days in their political history.

And anyway, China will be the world's superpower in 30 years. I would rather it was you guys, because I expect I will be even less in favour of the way they will flex their muscles --- but if I was younger, I would start taking Mandarin lessons.

luckydog, Canada seems to have an effective “level of immigration” about twice that of the U.S. --- in any case, the real value of these levels stands in measure to our respective countries policy embrace towards racial and cultural mixing. (Canada’s official Multiculturalism Act). The Act has its critics as some feel it has had a marginalizing impact, but given the ever increasing globalization and movement of peoples, any countries future depends on it’s citizens commitments to a single identity, one that still takes pride in the uniqueness of heritage. That’s the challenge! Other than seeing the U.S. has made no real National gains towards recognizing Spanish as an official language, I’ve no knowledge or insight into your countries embrace towards racial and cultural mixing --- luckydog, enlighten us.

Canadian population – estimated @ 32,162, 297 (Statistics Canada) & the recent Canadian immigration targets have been set at 250,000 per year (Citizenship & Immigration Canada)

The U.S. immigration rate has risen from about 2.0 per 1,000 residents in the 1950s and 1960s to about 3.5 per 1,000 residents by 2000. (Center for Immigration Studies – “an independent, non-partisan, non-profit research organization founded in 1985, devoted exclusively to research and policy analysis of the economic, social, demographic, fiscal, and other impacts of immigration on the United States.”)

Timec98, let me cherry pick the easy one of your points.

Let’s say there was a state that only allowed businesses to have signage in English, all other languages were against the law.

Let’s say a state mandated that any families moving into the state had to send their children to English schools.

Let’s say the state put up all of their signs in English even when there was a significant population of non-English speakers and all state courts were conducted in English only.

Let’s say the constitution of the US specifically prevented such outrageous interference in the civil rights of the individual. But they got around the constitution by have a “notwithstanding clause” and so if the state put this notwithstanding clause into their law it could not be declared unconstitutional.

I am sure your opinion would be the state must be run by bigoted, white male Americans.

Timesc98 rest assured that situation could never happen in the US, but this very situation has happened in North America, I am sure you can figure out where.

And LD smashes the slow pitch given by Timec98 over the right field fence. Thanks for the easy pitch, my brain needed a rest.

luckydog, you're resting too much :D

From your examples, I might think that state was trying to enact measures to attempt to protect it’s unique cultural identities. In reality if one of your states opts to do as you’ve exampled I hope your system of government would allow for a respecting democratic means of resolution --- one that wouldn’t throw that state into a secession mode or, dare say, bring forward measures of civil unrest in attempts to resolve differences.

 --- but I’m not clear how any of this discussion allows you to bring forward examples of just how the U.S. is working to embrace the racial and cultural mixing of new immigrants to your country.

(It's informative to review just how the notwithstanding clause has actually been enacted around Bill 101 signage provisions --- it’s a good read :D In reality, since 1985, it’s only been used occasionally (by both the Quebec PQ and Liberal governments))

Well, let’s look at the cultural mix of the US. It has not been mandated by government decree; culture survives based on the group’s desire to pass culture from one generation to the next.

Start with the Cajun French culture in New Orleans. Here is a group of people chased out of Acadia a few hundred years ago. If you have ever been to New Orleans you will know the French culture is alive and well. It survives because the people want it to survive.

Lets now move to the Chinatown areas or San Francisco and New York. These communities have a rich Chinese culture and it is passed down from generation to generation.

Italians have a strong presence in New York and Chicago. Have you ever been to little Italy in New York. What a great community.

How about the Hispanic community. Again they have preserved their culture, not through government mandate, but through a desire to ensure each generation understands their roots.

Now lets move to the 2 cultures I think have done the least to pass their culture on to the next generation. Those are the African American community and the Native American community. Why is that? A big part of it is government intervention. Southern Democrats (sorry I just had to say that) wanted to enslave the African Americans and eliminate not only their culture, but they were considered as only 2/3 of a person. Modern day DEMS want to protect this community by giving them a pass and not requiring them to meet the same standards every other ethnic community must meet to be successful. This has severely damaged the culture of this community.

The Native Americans in both Canada and the US under went the same degree of government interference again with the same disastrous results.

Culture survives because of the will of each generation to preserve it. The US allows a culture to thrive. Canadians seem to legislate that a particular culture must survive.

Final if you want to justify Bill 101 as necessary for the French in Quebec not to be swallowed up by the rest of Canada, go ahead. My point is Bill 101 would never pass a constitutional challenge in the US and I am glad it would not. I am sure it is comforting to Canadians to know that the notwithstanding the constitution clause has not been used very often.

There is a new theory that civilisations collapse when the distribution of wealth becomes too top-heavy. This has been demonstrated in the fall of Rome, Britain and Egypt.
That's not a new theory. Some guy named Marx proposed that in the 19th Century.

He had this great idea that government could redistribute the wealth uniformly, and hence optimally, by taking "from each according to their abilities" and giving "to each according to their needs." It was wildly successful everywhere this idea took hold, except for massive shortages, economic collapse, starvation and the need for high walls, barbed wire, machine gun toting border guards and secret police to keep people from fleeing to countries with unfair wealth distributions.

luckydog, thanks – a nice read; however, I see what you’ve described as exclusionary, as showcasing ethnic segregation rather than that much, from the past, touted portrayal of the “great American Melting Pot” and it’s promise of transforming immigrants into Americans.

I’ll take this official Canadian Multicultural policy statement – any time: Canadian multiculturalism is fundamental to our belief that all citizens are equal. Multiculturalism ensures that all citizens can keep their identities, can take pride in their ancestry and have a sense of belonging. Acceptance gives Canadians a feeling of security and self-confidence, making them more open to, and accepting of, diverse cultures. The Canadian experience has shown that multiculturalism encourages racial and ethnic harmony and cross-cultural understanding, and discourages ghettoization, hatred, discrimination and violence.

Through multiculturalism, Canada recognizes the potential of all Canadians, encouraging them to integrate into their society and take an active part in its social, cultural, economic and political affairs.
