As far as I understand it, the rules of the game are:

  1. Be civil at all times. If in doubt, leave it out - as the standard for civility is a bit unclear.
  2. Stay on topic. Personally I don`t care, but I`m willing to go with the idea for this topic.
The stimulus for this thread is the editting that took place on another thread: Poppies for Peace

I am at a disadvantage right off the bat. I think I missed much of the discussion that took place on that thread prior to editting.

Unsurprisingly, I am against censorship. What may come as a surprise is that I choose to not make an opening statement. I`ll let anyone who is interested make the first real comment on the issue.

Gentleman (and ladies), lets have a good, civil discussion.

Ding!

Edit: Just to head off an obvious objection at the pass, I`ll agree that what happened appears not to have been editting but actually something quite different. Hopefully, OTBn can go along with the word "editting" because I think the invention of a new word is just going to confuse things.

Constantly deleting a thread then reposting it to get rid of other posters comments is bullshit.

Personally I think the idea of purchasing the raw opium for production of medicinal diamorphine has merits but I wouldn't bother articulating my opinions in that thread. Why bother wasting my time when anything I post will most likely be deleted?

Why censor at all unless something posted is illegal? Things around here would go smoother if the mods weren't tasked to thumb through threads looking for something rude that was said in order to punt it. Letting people be themselves by getting passionate about what they say is what makes the lounge interesting. Allowing for a thread to develope in which those partaking must think a little should be the goal. Not clamping down because some one posted something laced with profanity or was rude.

I agree 100% with that DD.

The last thing we need here is someone else deciding that since they don't agree with my (or anyone else's) posts, they should be deleted.

If everyone agreed with everyone else here there would be no need to even post would there?

If the thread is that far gone off base from the original intent ... why not just nuked the whole thing and restart it with the original post plus a quick explanation on the thread reboot.
Why only ONE person's monologue along with a few "edited" quotes from other posters which can easily be "edited" to be out of context.

In effect this is what was done… not because of any differing expressed views on the threads intended topic; rather, because it had been high-jacked. If people would rather start pissing wars and prattle on about why they think this board has merit and that board doesn’t, or why there have been presumed unsubstantiated bannings in the past, etc., I don’t think it belongs in the same thread as what I intended. Again, I suggested they start their own thread and bring their concerns forward… rather than continuing to go back and forth between boards and calling this one down “over there”.

Censorship is self defeating because it implies that all things are known in advance.

Historically it has been show time and time again that when people's ability to question has been limited to "worthwhile" topics, when people were not allowed to wander or stray from proscribed areas of study, they have been overtaken by those that allowed serendipity a chance to take hold with the free play of ideas.

Censorship is merely a fear of the unknown, not as those that champion often argue, a comment on the quality of discussion or inquiry. Because unless an idea is brought forward, examined, debated and tested its qualities are not known, and cannot be judged.

If you practice strict censorship and refuse to explore the unknown, it doesn't go away. Instead you become like the person afraid to leave their house, locked up inside a prison of their own making, a lonely recluse while the world outside passed you by.

Self Moderating OTBn?

I bet Freddie would have preferred that you did just that at West Edmonton Mall...
