To the trucker who yelled at me to “turn on [my] lights” in West Kelowna around 6:00pm last night: Bless. 🙏

I took Genevieve in the morning for her regular maintenance, didn’t realize the tech turned off the automatic lights during my two-minute drive home from the shop, and my low lights aren’t THAT noticeable within well lit areas as is. No one ever drives my car and it’s routinely left on the same settings. I felt silly having not noticed and a little sad that I unintentionally created extra risk on the road.

The way you re-shouted it as we made eye contact, and gave that lil “Oh she does give a shit” nod as you noticed me mini-bow in gratitude and immediately turn them on… Very sweet. I appreciate you saying it with no evident frustration written on your face (especially with all the crap you guys deal with daily).

With a healthy respect for physics, I am wary of pissing off men carrying large loads. If one thing goes wrong, I’d be injured far worse than most truckers.
Thank you, whoever you are, for making me feel loved and safe. I appreciate you for being a “neighbourly” driver and shouting at me. May you always have safe travels. 🫂

Good point. My car goes in for sevice next week. I would never have thought to check settings afterwards so thank you. BTW I'm old enough to get the reference to Genevieve. Love it!

if you all have read the latest version of the driver guide/rider guide from icbc, you are required to turn your headlights on 24/7 (low beam) and nighttime headlights (low beam) and taillights on from sunset to sunrise or overcast or no direct sunlight at all. many people don't know or ignore this.

I find myself turning my lights on/off behind cars that have theirs off to indicate to them that they need to turn them on but everyone just thinks I'm flashing them to move out of the lane or something. It sucks bc with their daytime running lights on only they're almost invisible at night (or inclement weather) from behind. Not sure why everyone just doesn't keep the Auto lights on all the time. It's not like cars from 20+ years ago that would drain the battery if you left them on after you turned your car off. Just keep the Auto on all the time.

I occasionally see people on the road that don’t have their lights on after dark. If I happen to be behind one I flash my bright lights about 20 times or so at them. Usually they dummy up and turn on their lights.

Not all vehicles have auto-on headlights. My vehicle doesn't and I've been guilty of running with headlights on but taillights off on occasion.

Yeah I just looked it up bc I thought it had been mandated (and it has) but I guess there are some that still have them manually operated. It should make your interior cabin completely dark if you don't have them on (which is also being mandated) so at least you've got a clue you're driving without lights.
