I am typing this after sitting and semi enjoying fresh salmon that was caught yesterday and dropped of to me this morning.

To start off I am originally from Ontario. I remember occasionally especially during the season having a salmon bbq at home. It was expensive and didn't happen that often and when it did it was something to savor and appreciate. Each time cook it with a different method and always improving. Fun times.

Now I live in BC, I have employees that are avid fishermen and go every weekend when in season and usually every other day I have them coming into to work with a catch for me or dropping off at my house like today. Fresh Salmon still practically moving and on the bbq. 10 yrs ago It would have been ecstasy, now its "shit, more salmon" lol. I have one freezer for salmon and one for blueberries.

To much of something good can take it from a special treat that is greatly appreciated to "crap, not again" Think this applies to most things in life. Now I am craving Pickerel or Walleye that was abundant when I used to fish in Ontario lol.

Keep that ATF a special treat for yourself and don't wear it out.

If you dont want it give it to the Union Gospel Mission, they will cook it up and it will be properly appreciated.

Too much of a good thing does spoil it.

Change it up a bit. I realize the salmon is free for you and just a FYI, you can buy Icelandic Cod freshly flown in daily. It's half the cost of salmon in shops. Super tasting and great texture.

Walleye and Pickerel are great tasting fish!

Used to enjoy a lot of those bony little fuckers when I lived in northern BC. Filets only!

You touch on something of the West coast style of what we hold dear and love to no end
maybe because we do have quite a fair share of it. But DAMN, that fair share over the years
has dwindled drastically and it's a serious problem.

It's just a different world compared to Pickerel or Pike or Walleye.
Even my Alberta friends who have lived there all their life and yes born there call those
things..........'Ditch Fish" LOL!! Pike on the other hand are known as Slough Sharks.

Salmon on the West Coast is simply something that is part of our culture in a way
and most people just love getting it any chance they can.
Right now it is a special boon of plenty as we are fortunately reaping the rewards of the previous
set record of 93 million Sockeye from 2014. Scuse me, set from 1916 I think it was for the previous
record. It Stunned every fisherman and Fisheries folk alike as to where that many fish came from.
Totally unexpected so that just tells you how little the department of fisheries and Oceans knows
what the hell is going on or further more. WHat the hell they are doing.

The years in between those.............there was NOTHING. Even last year the Fraser was closed to Spring
Salmon fishing all season. First time in history that had ever happened.
So take that over abundance and hold it close and dear. It is possibly looking like that within
even your lifespan the salmon stocks could be on the near extinct list. They are on the closely
watched nearly endangered list now.

Hopefully this abundant stock we have right now will continue to perpetuate itself in the future
with much more care and appreciation for what it is. Let's hope so!!

Oh btw, the one time I've eaten Pike it was fantastic. Just watch out for the 'Y" bones.

Likely has something to do with how much water we’ve been getting the last couple years. I see a lot of cute little fry making their way down. Hopefully the population keeps rising

And also just as important is how much cold clear water they have on their return trip to their
place of birth where they've paired up and dig a nest, lay their eggs to spawn out.
Habitat is crucial to keep our West Coast Salmon fishery alive and well.

Among other things of course, but it surely is most important for that.

What really blows my mind about the entire Salmon fishery is the mind blowing gauntlet of
obstacles these creatures endure and to see them return after having gone through all that
is a complete MIRACLE in my mind. Quite extraordinary indeed.

LOL!! Makes me wonder how the human race would fair facing those same obstacles. :croc:
