I believe that is illegal.
I have heard of it from friends’ kids.
Food service employers are literally stealing from heir employees at the same time as they bitch about “nobody wants to work”.
I have previously mentioned one of my childhood friends owns a posh place in Van and he has turned into one of the biggest assholes of all time.
A lot of these guys are predators - he definitely is - and they know how to pick employees who they can manipulate.

Huge difference to me for tipping is if it is a sit-down table service place vs. Over-the-counter fast food place.

Basically, If a human being comes and greets me, tells me about the specials, takes my order, brings me drinks and food, and the bill when I want it, that server gets a tip every time. Factors taking it up or down from my 15% nominal include: Timeliness/attentiveness of service, pleasantness/attitude, hotness if she’s a she; funniness/bro-ness if he’s a he, quality of food, quality of the establishment, and more recently I have added “if they seem to enjoy their job or not”. I find it uplifting and inspiring when people enjoy their chosen vocation, and that is becoming a bigger tip factor for me (waitresses & SP’s especially)!

I don’t run through numbers, just feel it through overall satisfaction level of the experience and tip accordingly.

However, if I order a coffee, a soda, an egg Mc-something and the server just has to grab it, turn around and hand it to me over the counter, then I’m like 0%, (or max 10% if somehow more pleasant than usual). This over-the-counter tipping with screens starting at 18% or 20% is a flagrant cash grab by the establishment imho, and I have decided to guiltlessly reject it. In fact, my buddies and I talk about it openly and agree, so we don’t feel cheap when we reject tipping for over the counter purchases. It would be like tipping the checkout lady at 7-11, and we are OK with not doing that, giving us more opportunity to tip bigger for propper service and incentivize service excellent moreso.

I do think some regs requiring a no-tip option on the main screen, and standard starting tip percentages would be helpful, especially for fast food and retail establishments.

I own several homes and my own business

The way I see it is if they’re upset they’re not being tipped enough they should get another job

However, if they did a good job, they should be appropriately tipped

There should be a checklist of what they are required to do which is included in the cost of goods that the customer is purchasing

And what they did beyond that that would entitled them to a tip for Enhanced service

otherwise, companies might as well start charging for enhanced service and charge a premium for it
Why couldnt they just pay a living wage, charge appropriately , and make tipping like 5-7%? Its fucking exploitive and if a business cant run without slaves , well....

People should just hire a butler if they need to feel special, not take it out on resteraunts and sevring staff. Besides, apparently some can afford it.

Most restaurants don’t make a lot of profit and often labour costs are their highest cost even if they aren’t paying much .

depending on the buisness though

I’d personally remove tipping if that were possible but the risk of owners stealing is too high

you look at any of the clubs or restaurants downtown they all steal openly from their staff but the tips are “good enough” no one will complain

black and blue got busted for it years ago and they have stricter tip put policies now . But stricter policies are also worse for service staff due to tax laws

I don’t think tips should be taxable but they are
Restaurants should charge appropriately for their products, so that they can pay their employees more appropriately.

Tipping is only truly expected in North America, from what I have been told.
I am open to being corrected.

All income should be equitably taxed. Equitable being key, and not a reason for the government to expand their spending portfolio.

Heres the thing - we're paying the staff anyways, cause if the tips don't top up the salary enough then people leave.

Except the way we do this essentially reduces the workers to demeaned beggars, subject to the whims of what kind of day some asshole is having and who they're going to inappropriately take it out on.
