I'm ok with service industry staff, but when I go somewhere and grab something off the shelf, and bring it the counter and it prompts me, I get peev'd. My Starbucks costs $8 I intentionally mobile app to avoid the tip option. My friend wanted to buy, and if you pay without app it prompts you. Somewhere else I was shocked. Think buying a frozen. Rootbeer at a&w. Min wage has been adjusted and not sliding scale anymore. Don't get me wrong, If you are cutting my hair, or serving me in a restaurant, I'm generous.
Back in my parents generation full service at a gas station, they cleaned your windows and checked your fluids. Now they just give you a mortgage application to fill up your truck
That's why self serve machines will replace all the low level food workers. Exactly like your gas example. Fast food restaurants are just giant vending machines with a nasty bathroom.

Wow , a lot of hatred for tipping servers .
Just so you all know.mist of those waitress’s are not even making 20% of what most office workers make or people in unions make yearly. But they still serve you w a smile on their face .

Not to mention most restaurants even when 100% booked all the time, only make a 10-15 % profit max .

If you feel so hard some by , the answer is easy .
Don’t go to the restaurant , cook at home .

Someone else who doesn’t feel like tipping is equivalent to having their nails pulled from their fingers w pliers, will go instead , they will not miss you .

Stop complaining, if you don’t like it , simply do it yourself .

I don't mind tipping and I always do it. However it pisses me off that management has inserted itself so much and that the poor servers need to get a good tip rather than being able to rely on a decent wage or enough hours. Whenever I hear about small businesses like restaurants complaining about not getting people, I am pretty sure that it is because of poor wages and conditions. My son works part time in an old age home while going to university. The management there makes sure that none of the staff get enough hours to justify benefits. Yet these old age homes, this one in Victoria, charge $10K/month.

If you read all the posts it’s not against tipping. It’s the automation of the tipping system that’s has gotten out of control. Most people in the above threads agree about tipping serving staff at restaurants and haircuts etc, it’s the down your throat automated tip machine tacked on top of the inflated commercial pricing. Ie I was just at a farmers market, they set a fair price on the goods they were selling. But for me to tip on top of that as he handed me a thing of Kale or soap is where I draw the line.
It’s not as bad as the peer pressure to round up groceries to donate to “the children “ so Jimmy Pattison gets a corporate tax break.

I think the OP was talking about fast food places that hand you your food at the counter and earn $17.40 per hour (McDonald's in my town pays $20+) for doing so.

Compare this to what a senior receives from OAP and GIS --- it comes to about $11 per hour.

In many US red states, the minimum wage is $7.25, so in those backwards places I can kind of see it.

As well as a low basic minimum wage a lot of states have a wage class for workers who earn tips that can be as low as 3 or 4 bucks an hour provided there is a reasonable opportunity to make up the difference through being tipped.

I hear ya, post pandemic kept me in the kitchen and I'm cranking out amazing quality super healthy quick meals. Everyone has their hand out in service industry like their the only ones suffering. Welllll I'm in a no tip biz so whos bucking up for me??? . I always pay cash for counter service.I tip 0% unless she's hot😁. Most restaurants in Van are soooo over rated and over priced for child size portions. Most are using inferior 2nd grade ingredients.
This is so true. Rarely go out for meals but did last week for a special occasion at a supposedly higher end restaurant. The meal I ordered was extremely disappointing for the price I paid of $36.00. Two days later say the same piece of protein in a local grocery chain for $7.99. So I figure with the restaurant getting that piece for a bulk price the markup was over the top. End note is that when I complained to the plate carrier who served the meal they actually tried to argue with me about the cut. This 20something was clueless and did not realize she was arguing with someone that spent over 50 years in the hospitality business 1/2 of which was owning two food service businesses. There are very few qualified waiters or waitresses anymore just a bunch of plate carriers who know little about the food & beverages they serve.

I frequent a bar/restaurant as a regular and get to know the servers. A lot of servers are clearing $500-$600 a night. Tipping has become over the top. I'm supposed to tip my server 18% for opening the bottle on my beer. It's ridiculous when you look at how much you are tipping them versus the actual amount of work the server did. If anything the back kitchen staff deserve way more and the servers way less

I think during COVID everyone became accustomed to debit/credit cards (myself included).
I've switched back to cash and in the rare instances when I go into a restaurant I don't mind tipping on the pre-tax amount. Any place else I don't tip ( I saw the option at a quick oil change place a few months ago, but when I went back it was gone).
As far as fast food goes, I haven't seen the tip option on any of the machines.
I would go if I was pressed for time or just feeling lazy; recently I've switched to just getting a coffee and no food. The main piss off for me is the .25 cent paper bag fee. Trivial, I know, but I think that was the tipping point for me (heh heh).
Interestingly enough, I find I spend less when I'm handing over actual cash.
Using a card becomes a transaction.
Paying cash becomes a purchase.

Call me rude. I don’t care.
30 - 50% ??? Jesus F’ing Christ that’s the worse I’ve ever seen. Back when cash was king I never minded tossing a couple of bucks into a tip jar for a harassed looking server. It may have actually been 30% plus, but I didn’t do the math and at least I was pretty sure it was going to the staff not into the company's bottom line. But to have it expected like that? Call me rude all you want but you’re not getting a penny. Chances are I’m not coming back either.

Food preparation should always be top level or it gets sent back. The quality of food prep must always be consistent. Food prep personal should be corporate compensated at an appropriate level.
Server staff are front an center to a customers experience often only get min wage, yet it is their attitude, attention, and appearance that directly determines our experience.
Servers should be tippedand they should not be required to tip share. The house should never get a percentage of the tips.
Fast food is controlled by the franchise and should not require rewards for exemplary service because the service should always be good, and should be consistent from customer to customer.
Tip culture has gotten out of control...
I will only tip if there was in fact custom service delivered to enhance my experience.
Screw the rest.

Servers have to deal with the public and omg, there’s some really rude entitled people in the world. I’ve done a lot of various things for money in my life including working in a restaurant when I was a teen. Servers definitely earn their tips for sure.

But aside from servers, I completely agree tipping is out of control. It’s this crazy expensive world we live in. Everybody’s trying to get by so they hope you’ll help a little by tipping. Even the cold beer and wine store wants tips. The $800 fractora treatment asks for tips too. I feel cheap when i dont. So of course I do sigh lol

Most fast food places have a tip option on the Interac device.
Today we went to a burrito place. The device had tip options but NO option for no tip. It
I don’t mind tips for excellent service but they aren’t an entitlement just for doing your job.
Tipping is becoming a way for businesses to offload their labour costs onto customers.
becoming?
