Most fast food places have a tip option on the Interac device.
Today we went to a burrito place. The device had tip options but NO option for no tip. It
I don’t mind tips for excellent service but they aren’t an entitlement just for doing your job.
Tipping is becoming a way for businesses to offload their labour costs onto customers.

I want to support our servers and help them earn a living wage. But starting the tip options at 18% or 20% and not giving a no-tip option for fast food is going to limit my repeat business of those greedy establishments.

I'm ok with service industry staff, but when I go somewhere and grab something off the shelf, and bring it the counter and it prompts me, I get peev'd. My Starbucks costs $8 I intentionally mobile app to avoid the tip option. My friend wanted to buy, and if you pay without app it prompts you. Somewhere else I was shocked. Think buying a frozen. Rootbeer at a&w. Min wage has been adjusted and not sliding scale anymore. Don't get me wrong, If you are cutting my hair, or serving me in a restaurant, I'm generous.
Back in my parents generation full service at a gas station, they cleaned your windows and checked your fluids. Now they just give you a mortgage application to fill up your truck

It's possible the no tip option is buried in the custom tip option. But yes, this is why I always use the apps to order and avoid this bullshit.

I've always tipped in cash on the pre-tax amount, even when paying by machine. I tell the server before they present the scanner, 99% of the time they clear the tip option for me.

Always an interesting moment when I hand the POS machine back and say I can't find the No Tip button.

Agreed - I am typically an "over-tipper" but the pendulum has swung too far IMNTBHO.

One approach I have used is to select "$ amount" and enter "$0".
I've used this as well, but typically at places where the employee has minimal involvement with the transaction.

It just got too much, I rarely go out to eat anymore. I cook simple foods at home. I feel better and save so much money. More I save, more I get to spend on this hobby!
I hear ya, post pandemic kept me in the kitchen and I'm cranking out amazing quality super healthy quick meals. Everyone has their hand out in service industry like their the only ones suffering. Welllll I'm in a no tip biz so whos bucking up for me??? . I always pay cash for counter service.I tip 0% unless she's hot😁. Most restaurants in Van are soooo over rated and over priced for child size portions. Most are using inferior 2nd grade ingredients.

Problem is the slow erosion of real wages over the last 9 decades - you should be able to afford a meal and tip well at 10-15%, but wages have not kept up with inflation.

Coporate profits and stock markets on the other hand have exceeded inflation. Also college fees.

Some establishments like Cora actually charge the server a tip % if a tip is not provided by the client. My son's girlfriend mentioned that to me. How fucked up is that?
That sounds like stealing from the employee?

Yes, it is fucking terrible. I was shocked to hear about this. But it shows how management is taking a cut in that it they either take it for themselves or need it for the kitchen staff that are poorly paid.

Just about every full service restaurant, bar or pub takes a cut for non tipped staff except for management. Been a long time since I’ve served or supported in food and beverage but %3 on all sales was a standard.

Also, my BIGGEST peeve is tipping on tax. We used to take tax amount and use that as tip amount. Give or take a few, with rounding was always 15-20%. Now the POS machines take tip based on amount + tax=%tipped.
Sorry I’ll tip on the product or service but not tipping on top of what the gov’t collects. Custom $ amount everytime.

A few places punch in the options on the card machine, (or whatever the kids are calling it these days) to void the tip option. One slice pizza places etc. I usually don't tip on the machine but throw some change in the tip jar. I figure it has a marginally greater chance of trickling down to the minimum wage workers.
