Back in the old days 'Free Delivery' was the norm when ordering Pizzas. Now most places have implemented a delivery charge.

Now I seldom order out for delivery. as I usually pick up my orders.

That being said, I am curious to know if people still tip when there is already a delivery charge? I am assuming the delivery charge goes to the driver.

Anyway, what's a good amount to tip on a delivery these days?

Yes I always tip. I look at the delivery charge and its usually $3-4 for pizza places and think if that would be enough for me to do that job in my car with my gas and not a f-ing chance. Anyways maybe I am generous and stupid for doing it but when a guy shows up and my door with my piping hot pizza I ordered and he is soaked from the rain an obviously tired I open the door in my teddy and give him at least a 5 for his trouble. A few have become clients lmao.

Side note, if you live in Richmond try Round Table pizza, absolutely the most loaded pizza you will find anywhere. Tropical Hawaiian is to die for :) http://www.roundtablepizzarichmond.com/specialty-pizzas.html

to let you know, most pizza places the drivers arent paid by the hour, they get paid by delivery, usually the amount of the delivery charge
i did pizza delivery for years as a side job, got paid by the hour, and can be a very lucrative job, once you factor in gas, wear and tear etc. also, places that pay by delivery dont pay for your gas

I think tipping is still mandatory in spite of delivery charges. As a younger man I worked as a bartender in a fancy hotel; sometimes people would ask me about the tips; how much goes to the servers; how much goes to the kitchen; what was customary for a tip (as it was a hotel there were lots of tourists from other parts of the world that simply didn't know). I don't recall ever being bothered to explain, and I think every hotel or pizza joint would have their own way of doing things, so just ask them, for example, if they keep the delivery charge themselves or how it works. I'd wager they'd just tell you, and from there you could decide what tip you felt was appropriate. Or you could just throw em all ten points.

tipping might be neighborhood related as well, some neighborhoods better than others which might explain the different charges

I like to tip when service is good or the person working is in need of the money (i.e. starving student) the other thing to think about is the all in cost

if prices get too low on the pizza side, they will make up for it with lower quality or fees for delivery

total all in cost might be a better way to look at it

thanks for the recommendation on roundtable, will have to try it

used to buy only from Bella downtown and on helmcken and broadway but moved further out and now buy from a small place on fraser between 51st and 52nd in vancouver

now I am craving pizzaaaa..........

Well now I am not sure about RT lol as others have commented on its quality. Maybe I just got sick of PH, Panago, Dom's and BP that I needed a change. I limit pizza to once a week max, more like one bi-weekly and maybe I got taken away by the amount of toppings but hey, some have yellow fever and some don't so everyone's tastes are different. Give it a try and let me know. :)

And I almost always tip. If the service sucks I tell the waiter/waitress so and don't tip. I have tipped when the food sucked but it was to the waitress because she tried everything she could to make it better. Wasn't her fault the cook has no idea what he is doing. I followed up with a review on yelp saying service good, food sucks.

right here and now
Always tip the delivery guy/gal, the delivery charge doesn't always go to them.

Pizza is like SEX....when it is bad it is STILL good and when it is GOOD it is GREAT.The person that delivers it is at the end of the chain. They did not make it they delivered it so make your tip based on that.If it shows up piping hot with precise instructions followed such as calling a cell phone or hitting the right doorbell then tip accordingly. If the person(why am I know forced to say person instead of "guy" oh yeah that is because of Political Correctness) and the person is 30 minutes late then fuck em for the tip......it is not a difficult job to deliver pizza.....if the place you order it from SUCKS that is your problem.

Have you ever, even one time, had a female deliver your pizza? I have not, but even if I had and I'd forgotten it would still only be once or perhaps even twice out of however many times I've ordered pizza. Food for thought... Speaking of which, the oft mentioned gender pay gap- I wonder how that reflects in service industry jobs such as pizza delivery? I recall working as a bartender as a younger man, and I never made as much as all the girls serving.

I had a flight recently and one of the snack venders beyond security, selling only processed junk food, handed me the credit card chip machine and it defaulted to asking for a tip before I could just accept the cost of the bag of chips I purchased. Seriously this girl just stands at the cash register while you select your snack and they have the stupidity to expect a tip.
