When I was at the Starbucks today, I was in very good mood with my typical grande americano. I gave a big smile to the girl working at the cashier while leaving a nice tip. But she gave me no response. Not even a smile or thanks. I thought that was rude. Do you typically leave any tip at the Starbucks or Blenz?

Don't really care for starbucks, only thing i like from there are the polar bear cookies(which they don'y carry anymore) & the iced passion tea. I usually just buy the passion teabags & make it at home. I usually leave a tip, these people don't get paid much & the boss is usually a dirty old man. so yeah, leave a tip. Spread the wealth i always say!

It's a hit & miss with many of the chain coffee shops.
In your case, perhaps she had a rough start... who knows but manners are always a must in any service industry I say.
In any event, if my greeting is met with more enthusiasm by the service person, I always tip.

Tips at Starbucks are based upon the number of hours worked per week.

That girl may have only been there for a short shift per week so tips really don't mean anything to her. Sure she could have said thanks etc.

I actually decided to stop tipping at Starbucks when I pay for the drink long ago because of a run of terrible service, wrong drink, missed order yadda yadda. Now when they get it right and deliver the drink in a reasonable amount of time; I go back and then tip after the fact. Never when I pay for the drink. Seems now I only tip once out of every three times I go there for a drink. Seems friendly service is not really something you can train into people.

I go to the same 2 Starbucks everyday and I tip every time I get a drink there.. Mind you they never mess up my order and are always super friendly because they see me everyday.. They don't make much and have to deal with some really crappy people. I always prefer to tip those in that type of industry.. If tim hortons had a tip jar, I'd leave them one too..

You tip, and yet you are still so hot. Nice to hear that.

Don't get me wrong. I tip and minimum is $1 - $2; just not automatically for poor to even mediocre service. I go to a few locations in Van, BBY and North Shore and some are just plain lousy service. Hardly any line up ie 5 - 6 people in front of me and twice they have either missed my drink or got a plain latte wrong in the past couple of weeks.

Why automatically tip for that type of service?

tips are an earned income, not an expected income. while many of the workers out there confuse the two, I refuse to tip unless the service was over and above what should be expected from them anyways. yes, it seems more often than not, good service is hard to find. if im at a restaurant and the waitress is not up to par by way of not checking up on me, refilling my drinks, prompt or courteous service then hell no i aint gonna tip! yes they are paid minimum wage, but thats what that job is though, a minimum job!! some friends of mine work in a restaurant get upset because they didnt get enough tips that night and will hamper there way to earning 100g's??? i mean get a grip here. you want tip, you work your ass off with a smile and make sure the person you are serving has a smile. then and only then they may give you a tip. if im buying a 5 dollar coffee, they need to understand that im paying waaaaaay more than i ever should, treat me as such, and maybe i will share some with you. these people are in a SERVICE industry, the very word is contradictory to how some behave out there.
