I use to really like Tim Hortons coffee but the past 6 to 8 months, it doesn't taste the same. It tastes watered down at any location. Is it just me or has anyone else noticed the quality of their coffee gone downhill? I know the cost of coffee beans has gone up in price and they want to keep costs down. Could this be part of the reason?

If you feel the need to stop for a coffee McD's is superior to Tim Ho's.
McDs is undrinkable! Taste like there is powder in it!

TH coffee? you get what you pay for. no way I'd drink that crud.
for a few more pennies, I would recommend places like
Artigiano, 49th Parallel, Elysian, JJ Beans, etc.

I am also a coffee snob. I can count on one hand the number of times I have had Tim's and it's always been weak coffee without any flavour. I think they pander to old people who like weak coffee so their afternoon naps don't get screwed up :pound:

I dislike Starbucks but will go there in a pinch. Their Anniversary Blend was/is very good. I am unsure if you can still get it.

My roaster of choice is Milano on W 8th near Cambie. The owner is like a mad scientist and makes up blends that have won awards in Europe against some of the best. Artigiano is ok but no where near the selection of Milano's blends.

I figure if I am spending $1200 on a good espresso maker there is no sense putting regular octane in it if I can put premium full leaded.

With that, it's time for another shot of premium :D

Most of us are really impressed with you guys who have contributed to this thread and the one on watches.

Everybody tries to one-up the next.

If a watch tells time, it is doing what it is supposed to do. The rest is for bragging rights.

If the caffeine in the coffee does its job, then that is why most drink it. When I drink my one cup a day in the morning, if it gets me moving, it matters not what I paid for it. The rest of you can pay your $5.00 for a fancy name. Me. I will use my money for more important things, like the reason most of us are reading this nonsense here.

"Most of us" - Where is the Poll or is that just you speaking for everyone because you think they will all agree with you?

1. Coffee is supposed to taste good not just give a caffeine kick. Tim's is like jerking off, it gets the job done but in the end you want the real thing.

2. Watches - I didn't wear one for five years since I was so hard on them and hated damaging my shit. I used my cell phone to tell time. Now was the time I wanted to have a decent watch again.

My SO insists on Timmy, but as long as it's fresh and hot I'm good....though I find Starbucks a bit bitter.

I don't fall for marketing bullshit. The places you mention are for hipsters and people who like to think of themselves as upscale consumers, when in fact they all buy their coffee beans from the same suppliers who brand and rebrand them a million different ways - not because there is anything significantly better or worse about the product, but to slice up the market for the purpose of product differentiation and reap way more profits from consumers such as you.

These stores do not hand-pick their beans, instead they buy brands that "promise" a certain quality. I think that these rebranded brands are the aggregate of bean selection from farms based on their yield and profit margin. The real good shit come from non-entrenched non-commercial supply chains, where it's an independent farmer or co-op that don't have "quality controls" (ie: yield requirements) imposed upon them by big company buyers. They show up in organic stores and boutique grocers with poor packaging from South America and you have to either grind it yourself or some coffee house has bought it and is selling it as their own "brand".

The next best thing are the Italian coffee houses on Commercial drive, provided their product is actually from Italy - where it's a tradition in Italy and the sourcing of beans comes from smaller companies with old relationships with local farmers in Africa.

I was merely suggesting a better cup of joe to the OP, nothing more, nothing less.
no need to ramble about hipster or upscale establishments, your statement is ignoramus.

and you don't fall for marketing bullshit? I would say you're full of shit, jc and I'm calling you out on this!
no doubt you own a smartphone, drive a nice car, own nice toys, wear appealing clothes…well guess what?
those are all carefully branded in one form or another so don't you be contradicting yourself.
unless of course you make your own stuff. but then again, you're jesuschrist! I think a nailing to the cross is in order. ; )

I completely disagree with the Tim's bashing and really enjoy a coffee from Tim Hotons. I have one in my office building and get one every morning. Strictly my opinion but I think the coffee is quite good and very fairly priced compared to Starbucks. I also have great admiration for this Canadian company that give back tens of Millions of dollars to communities all across Canada in the form of sponsoring youth sports programs. My son like hundreds of thousands across Canada has competed in Timbits Soccer and Timbits Hockey. They also sponsor high profile events such as the Briar and other community initiatives while Starbucks are just another Foreign company that are here to maximize profits and give very little back to the community.

As for the coffee itself. I think it is fine but I do find that it varies by location in some cities.

Well I guess I'm one of those smucks that have no taste. I prefer Tim Horton's coffee over Starbucks any day. I absolutely hate Starbucks coffee and the pretentious way that Starbucks lovers order their coffees. What a bunch of pretentious bull shit. Plain coffee, the simplier the better with cream .... period.

I'm now going to sound like the pretentious Starbucks pricks and say that the absolute best coffee I have ever had was at a small cafe near the hotel I stayed at in the old part of Rome. I also had the best pizza there and have yet to find anything similiar in Vancouver.

But in Vancouver I will drink any coffee as long as it is not Starbucks.

As I said I admit I probably have no taste. In fact I prefer a Macanudo from Dominica over any Cubans. Even the mildest Cubans have too sharp a taste for me.

Coffee is coffee.

I'll order it anywhere as long as the answer is "yes" to the following three questions.

1). Does the lineup number two people or less?

2). Can I find a seat?

3). If I want food, does this place have anything I like?

I'm still a sucker for Timmy's "Rrrroll up the rim to win" promo. I'll probably fall for the "evil hipster marketing plot" too (first chance I get).
