As details have emerged from the horrific shooting at a Colorado movie theater last Friday, the stories that have touched many have been those of sacrifice and selflessness. These were ordinary people taking decisive, brave actions to save those they love. Among those courageous people were three young men who died saving their girlfriends. The men — Jon Blunk, 25; Matt McQuinn, 27; and Alex Teves, 24 — each died protecting their girlfriends by shielding them from the gunman’s bullets. Blunk and McQuinn threw themselves on top of their partners, while Teves pushed his girlfriend to the ground, out of harm’s way. [Source]

why didn't the women simply get down and hide behind the chairs, which are made of steel and impenetrable to bullet fire, if only to spare the lives of the ones who ultimately saved them?

Let's not get caught up in minutia.

Anybody - man or woman - who went out of their way to protect others during this calamity deserve our respect - period.

From a traditional perspective, it is definitely nice to see examples of good old fashioned chivalry on the part of guys protecting their ladies. But all such people, IMO, get a big salute from me in the end.

What theater do you go to?

Most seats have Steel frames, Aluminum cross beams/ springs, seat foam and plastic. Depending on the weapon used 900-1500 FPS and the number of bullets fired for Automatic weapon or semi auto. Would dice those chairs into Nothing quickly. They aren't designed to be bulletproof or bullet resistant. No Kevlar on movie seats.

In a Confined dark space with smoke from a smoke grenade that he tossed in for panic and effect. Before he started shooting. He probably sat near and targeted an exit where people would be running to for greater effect.

Well I'm no expert on automatic weapons, smoke grenades, Kevlar, or even steel.

But I did read the OP's original post that "Teves pushed his girlfriend to the ground.... out of harm's way", which tells me that some people weren't all that cognizant and someone had to protect them. My point is that in this one particular example, they should have tried to protect themselves but instead they were damn lucky someone was there to protect them, and lost their life because of it. So my greater point is, if you're gonna be a useless idiot who can't protect yourself, someone else will pay to protect your sorry ass.

Anyways, I couldn't care less. Thank God we have much stricter gun control laws that prevent shootings from being an every day occurrence, unlike the US where gun violence is rampant. And frankly I stopped caring because Americans will never learn, the politicians love money more than safety of their citizens so can't stand up to influence peddling of groups like the NRA, and half the population is too stupid to know guns are not good for society.

Yes, sadly there has already been a tremendous surge in the purchase of guns on Colorado because all the wingnuts are afraid someone in US politics might actually grow a pair and take on the gun lobby. I've even heard a couple of NRA types say how owning guns could have prevented this tragedy because if more people were "packing", one of the people at the theatre could have perhaps killed this guy first. Talk about warped logic and really screwed up sense of values.

I just love the expected comments from the NRA that if everyone was packing then someone would have been able to kill the guy.

I go to the range on a regular basis.

There is no way I would be able to hit anyone if 1) they are shooting back at me; 2) there are lots of innocent people around; 3) without perfect lighting; 4) unless he is standing perfectly still; 5) he is no more than 30 feet away and facing me. In general what are the chances that someone packing who was not involved with the military or police and training on a regular basis can shoot the gun man without killing innocent bystanders?

Now I know there are a lot more retired military in the US than here but really the gun man lit off a smoke bomb, it was a dark theater and there were lots of innocent people around. I bet even the police would have a hard time hitting him.

I rather agree that such a display of altruism should be commended in whomever it appears, rather than expected of men. These were amazing sacrifices by some amazing humans.
