"A serial sex offender whose 20-year history of perversion includes pouring a vial of semen on a stranger’s head is back behind bars.
Michael Grodde, 49, was sentenced to 16 months in jail Wednesday after admitting he made an obscene phone call to a woman working at a downtown mall.
Defence lawyer John McAmmond argued the crime was relatively minor given Grodde’s record and compared it to “John Gotti stealing a chocolate bar.” McAmmond said the incident is evidence Grodde’s criminal behaviour is “de-escalating” under therapy.
“You can’t suck and blow at the same time,” McAmmond said. “If it is escalation in one direction it is de-escalation in the other. He made one very brief dirty phone call ... clearly the charges are going down in their severity.”
Judge Catherine Carlson said that was of little consequence for victims at the receiving end of Grodde’s “offensive and disgusting actions.”
“Your recent behaviour may be a de-escalation for you, but for the community and the victim it is a very serious offence,” Carlson said.
Court heard Grodde was out of jail just three weeks when last April he made an obscene phone call to a woman he saw working at Cityplace.
Police later arrested him after identifying his phone number through the victim’s call display.
Grodde had just finished serving a 14-month jail sentence for committing an indecent act. He was arrested in 2009 after he was spotted masturbating on Henderson Highway as he watched a woman waiting for a bus.
In 2007, Grodde was charged with sexual assault after he approached a female student at the University of Winnipeg and poured a vial of his semen on her head. Police arrested him a week later “with more vials of semen in his pocket,” said Crown attorney Cindy Sholdice.
Grodde was arrested in 2005 after police caught him openly masturbating near Health Sciences Centre, “greeting passersby as they went on their way to work,” Sholdice said. “He had maintained an erection after a lengthy foot chase.”
Grodde’s most serious offence was in 1994 when he forced a 34-year-old woman into a parking lot and raped her at knifepoint. Police arrived to find him passed out on top of the woman.
Grodde has received the benefit of counselling and therapy numerous times only to reoffend again and again, Sholdice said.
“The reality is he is either not choosing or not able to control his impulses and that makes him a danger to society,” she said."
