Listen in on local sex workers in conversation with journalist and sex worker rights advocate Jody Paterson in the brand-new podcast This is Not Just About Sex, which made its debut just in time to mark the International Day of Action for Sex Workers' Rights on June 2nd. This episode: SESTA/FOSTA and stigma, and how campaigns that presume all sex work is trafficking hurt workers' small businesses and put them at risk of harm.

And just to shamelessly self-promote, mine is one of the voices you'll hear. Thanks for listening, and for your allyship, and for your business too!

That was awesome, I actually listened to the whole thing. You ladies presented extremely well and your points and arguments were articulate and thought-provoking. This sort of material needs to find a bigger audience in order to enlighten the mindset out there. It would be wonderful if a mainstream radio station would pick that up and play it or host a similar talk.

Again, really well done.

So exciting!
Thanks friends :) The idea is to continue the series, delving into different topics, and with a variety of guests with a diversity of experience in the industry. Jody Paterson has a fairly substantial following, so hopefully the series gains momentum.

Why is Perb never mentioned as ad sites?

I gave the podcast a listen and kudos for the ladies on it. Marijuana ( I tried it a long time ago but don't anymore ) which will become legal soon, we can hope that legislation, eventually, get their heads out of their asses and make escorting legal. Safety for the ladies all around is the number 1 issue. Always has been and I'm all for it. It be great if a radio station/ local tv had a regular segment relating to this industry so society in the mass can understand it much better and not attach a " bad " stigma to it. Just my thought.

Also, I'm very curious about this.......I have heard past podcast/reports on this industry and Backpage, craiglist & leolist are always mentioned but PERB is never mentioned by any of the ladies. Why is that?? Is PERB kept close to all the ladies chest and don't want it revealed to the public? Curious.

Hmm... I guess it just never came up in the conversation? *shrug* :)

And to clarify something regarding your first point, we want decriminalization of sex work, not legalization. It may sound like the same thing, but decrim is the removal of all criminal penalties related to sex work, while legalization sets up a legal framework under which it may occur- a framework wherein many workers, mostly the most marginalized and vulnerable, are still left outside of the protection of the law. Perhaps a topic for a future podcast?

Standing Ovation Mona Bardot, thank you for speaking up and standing up for us and bringing awareness into the community, and addressing these serious topics that effect us all. Thanks to you and the other ladies who spoke up with their experiences and viewpoints. It's about time we combat these misconceptions, stigmas & blanket statements and defend ourselves against those thinking we are all being "trafficked" ... we are doing this of our own accord and it's consensual and a lot safer than even regular dating these days.

Thank you SO MUCH Lalani. Getting the blessing of my colleagues means the most! Let me know if you would ever like to be a guest on a future podcast :)

Thanks for the link and I found it informative.

Only thing I'd add is it may be legal to sell but illegal to buy. I get you were with SP's discussing it from SP's perspective.

Technically it is as illegal to sell as it is to buy.

Material benefit from sexual services
286.2 (1) Everyone who receives a financial or other material
benefit, knowing that it is obtained by or derived directly or
indirectly from the commission of an offence under subsection
286.1(1), is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to
imprisonment for a term of not more than 10 years.

The Conservatives were lying when they said they were only targeting the buyers. They hid the lie by giving the sellers immunity from prosecution. The problem is, while sex workers may not be vulnerable to prosecution, they may be vulnerable to discrimination and other losses of rights and opportunities because, prosecuted or not, they are committing a criminal offence. I point this out to emphasize that the law needs to be repealed. The problem there is that there is a review of the law expected a few years from now and it is unlikely the Liberals will do anything before the next election and the review.
