Read this on another forum: any US legal types care to comment?

=================

The U.S. House of Representatives is about to pass FOSTA (H.R. 1865). The Senate will probably follow suit.

This new law is primarily targeted at online sites that facilitate sex trafficking. But, it includes a section that makes simple whoring a federal crime. The new crime is "promoting or facilitating" the prostitution of another person if done by means of a phone, text message, email, or internet. This language is broad enough to make a simple solicitation a federal crime because the john "promotes" and/or "facilitates" the prostitution of the hooker by soliciting and patronizing her. As soon as that bill becomes law, anyone using a phone call, text, phone app, or email, to set up a date in the United States is violating federal law.

A few thoughts on this:

1) It will be much riskier to post reviews on sites like TER. That will clearly fall under the new federal crime. Fuck, even posting on this forum may become illegal.

2) Sites like TER, Eros, P411, etc., will probably be operating illegally in the United States. I would be shocked if the feds do not try to shut them down.

3) Any solicitation sting could have a federal component - imagine Tom Dart-type stings, but by the FBI. This will happen somewhere.

4) The consequences are real bad - federal felony, possible registration as a sex offender, federal prison up to 10 years, a monetary fine, forfeiture (i.e., the feds confiscate all property (car, phone, computer, etc.) you used in commission of the crime).

I'm not saying necessarily that it's time to quit. But be mindful that the legal risks are about to go way higher.

I would be interested in seeing the original article or text. What you have posted here is rather poorly written.

I will try to find a link to an article from a US law enforcement board.

A "vice" detective was giving advice to others on how to run their stings. These guys are nuts over prostitution, and go to any lengths to fight it. They had no second thoughts about busting independent women working out of their homes, not bothering anyone. To the cops, all prostitutes are the same.

He also explained how to get federal funds via Homeland Security. He worked with a state attorney to pitch proposals that include "suspicion" of illegal immigrants (a hot button issue) or trafficked women (another hot button issue).

Sad that an agency set up to fight terrorism is now terrorising harmeless women.

Just look at who is in charge (I think?) of the circus down there.

Careful, there are a lot of Conservative supporters on this forum who will attack when you say something about a republican or conservative on this board in spite of the fact conservative thinking and laws try to restrict our freedom to poon.

Thanks for the heads up. It's pretty scary to see how laws are becoming so regressive down south.

I'd also add it would be a good time to be extra cautious when crossing the border. Personally, I'd only carry a 100% pristine electronic device.
It's very scary down here (on many fronts)

In the last few years have avoided going up to Canada for one reason. The sometimes awful experience from the USA agents upon return. If you're by yourself and don't look like the family kind of person you might get sent in for " questions".
It freaks me out that my own country might set me up for failure with some kind of charge for legal activities in Canada. Try getting a good job with anything on your records.

So for now, I just go south of the border and have no hassles with the Southern USA agents who do not care you had fun with the ladies in Mexico.

Another reason I intend to live out my older years down south.

I agree. Seems Canadian Border Services and US Border agents are upping the ante these days. More detailed questions about where I am going, who I gonna see, and if its all work related type questions. Coming back to Canada its similar now. Before it was only to check if I had spent more than my allotment or had guns.

A couple of people I know have chosen Panama as their go to place for extended periods. Renting a place, eating in restaurants, out drinking etc costs them about $2K a month. Pooning seems to be unnecessary to them. The local ladies like pleasant, friendly and generous Canadians; they will stay with them for an extended time to help them enjoy their holiday ;)

Seems pretty reasonable to me and in their opinion the place is super safe that welcomes Ex Pats to live there.

I am newly back in BC after spending a little over 10 years down in the states.
There are some good boards down there that help you stay safe, but over the last few years the level of paranoia has risen sharply.
The board that I was on doesn't let you say anything directly sexual in your reviews.
The ladies cant show too much nudity in their ads.
It makes it difficult to determine what a ladies menu is.
Even texting about menu items with a provider is dangerous.
If it turns out to be a cop that you are texting with, then they have all the evidence they need to prosecute.

The risk of stings is real down there.
The law enforcement strategy relies heavily on shame.
They will do a sting (post a fake ad on CL or some other ad site) then round up anyone who makes an appointment and shows up.
They arrest the guys, get their information, and publish their names in the paper and online.
It is supposed act as a deterrent.

Coming out of that culture back to BC has been refreshing.
I am having a little trouble letting my guard down though.
I was texting with the handler for an Asian group and he was being very specific about what the ladies would do and for how much money.
It freaked me out and I bailed on the appointment for fear that it might be a sting.
I posted a question about it in the lounge and got a pretty consistent response that stings like that don't happen here unless they are going after people for underage girls or trafficking women.
This seems like a good policy to me.
Protect the people that need to be protected and leave consenting adults alone.
This was my post.

The Americans do have a history of applying their laws in other countries. Look at what Harper did to Mark Emery. With the new US internet law it will be interesting to see if Trudeau has any more backbone than Harper.

Yeah it's getting really weird down here, I've been lucky that I haven't been stopped at the border yet, but I come up to Canada for work every few weeks and I kind of like this hobby..

Extradition usually requires the activity be a crime in both countries involved. Canada will not extradite anyone for activities that are legal in Canada, or any offense that carries less than a 2 year (and in some cases, 5 years) jail term in Canada.

Lets see:
Tax breaks for the richer people. None for Middle class. Cuts in support for government departments. The poor don't get medical insurance. Threats of trade wars, with long time allies. Making the gap between rich and poor more, causing laws to change so banks can make more money without holding a backup reserve of money. Changing internet laws, so owners can select (or ask for more money from users) who gets priority on their internet servers, where they can block or slow down sites they don't like. Manufacturers can pollute their environment with out worry about government interference; poisoning what is left of the natural beauty of America. Create racial mistrust. Sounds like someone is setting the country up for a civil war. Rich vs poor....... the haves vs the have nots...

But the funny thing is that the wealth of all those American Corporations is not really in America, its in the gobal economy. All that manufacturing that used to be in America, is now overseas, lower wages, bring the product back to America, higher profits. Cost $5.00 to Make product. Out of country sale price 15.00. Minimum tax paid to out country( 15-5 =$10) on $10.00. (Company get tax break for having factory in that country) Price sell in US 50.00 . Now reinvest those profit into other countries overseas....

Funny thing I was looking for acryllic sheets (clear plastic ). Talking to the supplier in Victoria, the sales person said that their were only 2 places in the world they made acryllic sheets, over in Asia and a plant down in the states. the plant in the states burnt down, and the price of acryllic sheets tripled in the past 2 years.
