So let me stir up some shit, and it is not even political.

Lord Stanley provided the cup to recognize the amateur hockey champion team in Canada. Somewhere along the line the NHL gain possession of it and it is now given to the professional hockey team in North America.

Given the Stanley Cup will not be awarded this year, maybe it is a good time to take it back and award it to the Canadian Amateur Champion.

So let me stir up some shit, I don't think there will be pro hockey next year as well, just as well let some of the over paid bums sit for a while. Amateur hockey is better & cheaper.

Actually I completely agree with you, I rather watch the Calgary Hitmen play anyday!! Especially when our Rivals from Red Deer, the Rebels are in town. But then again when you know half of both teams it makes for some good drinkin times at my house after the game.

yes, i agree, we should allow all the minor teams work to get their names on the cup....once you propose that, don't you think the NHLPA would be scrambling to get back to work

The NHL is not hockey. There is all kinds of hockey still available, by going out and supporting minor/major hockey you show the NHL that we don't need them.
Why do so few guys and gals who claim to be hockey fanatics actually play? You don't have to take it seriously, just skate around a bit on your neighbourhood rink. It's more fun doing it than watching on tv.

If it wasnt for the NHL, the Stanley Cup wouldnt be what it is today and would be meaningless to most.

I agree the NHL has given the cup meaning........more to the point the players on the teams that have won it over the years have really given the cup it's significance.

I say take the Cup back and do with it what Lord Stanley wanted done with it, can you imagine the buzz at the Memorial Cup if the winner had their names added to the Stanley Cup......talk about added incentive, not to mention even more people tuning in to watch tomorrow's best players sacrifice their body for the chance to drink from Lord Stanley's Cup.

I think it would be awesome!!

If the children in the NHL and NHLPA learn to play nice......then allow them to borrow it again!!

As a relative newcomer to hockey, let me add my 2 pennies. As I see it, it is a pro sport and still about money. Both sides know that, and in the US the TV hockey season begins after the Super Bowl, followed by the playoffs. That is where the real money is.

I feel they will play this year, and have already looked at the Canuck schedule for Feb and March.

How they will determine who is in the playoffs is anybody's guess, but there will be a playoff. The league and the Union know they can not jeopardize future money.

Reading the posts here I realize how much both sides have hurt themselves. Most of you guys on this board are the real hockey fans in North America. I hear how many of you have been turned off to the whole situation. The NHL knows that they cannot afford to lose their true fan base. (See baseball, circa 1994.)

Actually, the Stanley Cup is meant to be a challenge trophy for the best hockey team in Canada, period. The Memorial Cup is for the best junior team in the country, and the Allan Cup is for the best senior team. I don't think there ever was a prohibition on the winners of those teams playing for the the Stanley Cup. Imagine the Edmonton Oilers of the eighties having to defend the cup several times a year, a la the heavyweight boxing champion, against the best teams that could be assembled to challenge them.
