For over 35 yes I would shave with ivory soap and noxzema. .Put on the cream and lather the soap and then mix the two on face..I used a safety razor.

Then I started with one if those 2 bladed razors.and then up to 3. ..and 5. .
I gone up on down on the number of blades..depending what on sale ..or the new one that is free in the mail.
But I have moved on to shaving gel ..either edge.. Or one of the others that is on sale ..
I still nick myself especially when when getting at ear hairs ;-)

A tip for you cheap guys (and gals).

If your razor feels like it is getting dull, simply run it backwards on your forearm with decent pressure several times. After this, you will be able to get a week or more worth of shaves out of it.

I was very skeptical at first too, but it really works.

By dragging the blade backwards, you are not sharpening the blade, but honing it. There is very little metal at the absolute edge of the blade. Because of this, the edge gets all wobbly -- resulting in bad shaving performance. Honing makes the edge true again.

You see the old-school barbers doing this to their flat blades using a honing leather. Chefs do this to their knives by using the dull side of a second knife.

I prefer Gillette fusion proglide, didn't like the Schick 5 blade because it would miss hairs occasionally.
Around the lips and nose Mach 3 turbo is better because it's smaller and less likely to miss hairs.

I shave my face every other day. I've used them all; Schick Hydro, Gillette Fusion, DollorShaveClub (Dorco razors) and Harry's. Even store name brands.

In October I did some research and decided to try traditional wetshaving. Never looked back. Love lathering my face with a nice shave soap and use my Edwin Jagger DE89 safety razor.

Still going through a 50 blade sampler pack to figure out which blades work best for me. So far I enjoy the Gillette 7 O'clock and Personna Lab Blue blades. Nice and smooth shaves!

For me this thing actually works!

Bought a Razorpit at west Ed on the weekend. was rather skeptical about the claims. used it on some Fusion blades that were just about done and it made them like new. I was surprised. good investment for around 25 bucks.

Technically I believe this is stropping
http://straightrazorplace.com/srpwiki/index.php/Razor_stropping

Honing an edge (knife, sword, cylicder bore) generally involves mild abrasive to smooth out and edge/surface. Stropping eases a thin sharp edge (eg: razor) back straight and true w/o material removal, as usage tends to 'turn' the edge of a fine sharp blade.

Great tip, though!

Just an update from me on the old shaving thread. Still find the Schick Hydo 5 blades to be by far the best I have used. Bought a old school german Merkur double edged razor with some Feather blades from Japan. Works well but really difficult to keep from cutting yourself to ribbons. Not great if you have a face with lots of tricky spots.
The Razor pit I bought was a really good investment and has paid for itself already in that I can make a Hydro 5 blade last a month. I believe their speil that blades feel dull because they are coated with crap after a few shaves and are really not dull at all. The edge is still there but it is coated with skin cells, soap residue and the like. The Razor pit serves to clean the still sharp edge. So many of you may not be able to get a Razor pit but what I have found to be really effective at cleaning your blade is "Vim Bathroom", spray it on the blade and rinse off all the crap. The difference it makes is stunning as it serves to disolve all the residue off the edge which actually takes a long time to get physically dull.
My dabbling in the double edge razor brought me into the world of brushes and English shave cream. A badger hair brush, (my dad agrees with me big time on this) is the best and combined with "Taylor of Bond Street" English shave creme in the jar. Unbelievably good stuff. I have had this 150gm container for 8 months! and there is still half left. It is the smoothest stuff I have ever used. Just a little dab on the brush and you are good to go for both face and below.

The above is the stuff I have been using and I bought it retail for twice as much.

Anyway that is my update on this old tread.
Vim Bathroom for the blades
and
Taylor of Old Bond Street shaving creme with a Badger hair brush which should last you a lifetime if you take care of it and keep the bristles from getting matted.

I bought the Hydro 5 (sensitive i think) based on this thread but found it not as close as the mach 3 turbo. I use them in the shower. Ended up going back to the old electric.
