Philip Seymour Hoffman strikes again in this superior film that explores the dynamics between a brother and sister as they reunite and attempt to work together to provide their estranged, demented father with an adequate care facility. This movie is not quite as brilliant as Julie Christie's Away From Her, but it stands on its own as an outstanding film that takes on the subject of Alzheimer's disease. Hoffman is incredible, as always!
...3.25 stars out of 4 on the Dr. Moe scale.

It's actually Sarah Polley's "Away From Her", bigmoe, if you were referring to the director. Julie Christie stars in the movie. Fellow Canadian Sarah Polley has been widely praised for her directorial debut that stars another Canadian, Gordon Pinsent (he actually once worked for my father, many many decades ago, before following his heart and becoming an actor) along with the always and still wonderful Ms. Christie.

I have to agree about Philip Seymour Hoffman being incredible. Though the Academy won't give out three Oscar nominations to the same person, he could theoretically be nominated in 2007 for his terrific work in "Before The Devil Knows You're Dead", "The Savages" and "Charlie Wilson's War". I've seen the first one (one of the three best movies I saw in 2007) and am looking forward to seeing the other two next week.

...no mistake, JustAGuy. I was referring to Julie Christie being the name star in Away From Her just as Philip Seymour Hoffman is in The Savages. I did not mean to imply that Julie Christie directed the film. Gordon Pinsent and Julie Christie were both excellent in Away From Her.
I agree with you about Hoffman being outstanding in Before The Devil Knows You're Dead. (Albert Finney was also superb.) However, due partially to a major plot inconsistency, I gave the movie only 2.75 stars out of 4 on the Dr. Moe Scale.

i loved Away From Her, and think Sarah Polley is such a talented canadian, and Hoffman is an absolute genius when it comes to his roles. I don't think the guy has ever made a bad film. i'll be checking this out for sure.

he also starred in Before the Devil Knows You're Dead this year as well. Did anyone catch that?

We were referring to it in a couple of the foregoing posts. Also, don't miss Capote and Love Liza if you are a Philip Seymour Hoffman fan.
