This is the time of year when those bell-ringing Sally Ann people and their kettles set up all over the place begging for money.

While I realize the SA does some good work, their antiquated and judgemental attitudes towrds sex workers and gays prevents me from ever donating to them.

There are better, more effective and more accepting charities that people can donate to, without feeling guilty when you pass by a SA begger.

They all kind of piss me off, and irritate me when they stand in public places. The only ones who get me are the kids. Girl guides and scouts.

All this plus in 2004 Joan Kroc (wife of Ray Kroc, founder of McDonalds) donated $1.5 billion to the Salvation Army should be more than enough to run their programs. I don't donate to them either but like Lady V I'm a sucker for any kid selling chocolates, popcorn or collecting bottles.

I can't remember the exact numbers but they only donate about 10-15 cents of every dollar received. And of that, most of it leaves the country. Would not be surprised if there were some very well paid employees.

You’re mistaken in how much of the donation money received by the Salvation Army goes to the needy. It’s actually one of the charities that returns the highest amount of donations.

I frequent thrift stores often. I find them alluring, mysterious, and adventurous, plus I love antiques. This one place that I visited often, I got to know one of the employees, and he told me why he stopped working for value village. They only donate a small amount of what they take in, and the amount they donated was in the millions. So imagine what they actually make ? Thats why he quit working for them and went to the salvation army instead.

United Way is one of the best charities out there.

A very high percentage of donations go to their supported charities.

All of the charities that they support are local charities.

When I worked for a major employer here in Van, that employer volunteered a senior management person for a whole year to assist the United Way. This is one of the ways that they keep their % contribution so high.

They post their financials and are generally very transparent. See: https://www.uwlm.ca/about-us/

In a free society, one can boycott anything or any organization one wants. As Salvation Army is rejected on grounds of being anti-LGBT+, it is odd there is no outcry against, say, Saudi Arabia - “considered to have one of the worst LGBT rights records in the world. Both male and female same-sex sexual activity is illegal.” (Wiki). Yet, Canada sold $15-billion worth of military equipment to the kingdom. 2018, Canada spent spent $3.54 billion on 6.4 million cubic metres of Saudi oil. So, the Salvation Army must go but Wahhabism - the ultra-puritanical form of Sunni Islam is Saudi Arabia - is a-okay. Where is your consistency people!

What are you on about? No outcry against Saudi Arabia? Have you been living under a rock? There are constant criticisms against them. Ever hear of Yemen? The 9-11 attacks? Adnan Kashoggi? Public executions? Lack of rights for women?

A government, supported by about 35% of the population, that the rest have no control over, doesn't reflect public support for Saudi Arabia.

Every year for over 20 now I get a family from the YMCA and buy their wish list with a food gift card, identified so they can buy their holiday meal or other food needs. Their requests are quite varied going from tooth brushes to toys to computers. I spend between $1000 and $2000. But 100% goes to them. I even get my grand daughters to help me. We even wrap, label and deliver. My best giving amongst others that take overhead. Think about how your donations get to those in need.
