Having been to a few Small town in China sex for sale is very out in the open. I have seen teens girl hang out in so called " hair salons" waiting for customers watching daytime soaps. The red light district was next to the police station. I have always said if you want a real foreign experience go to small town China, not the ultra bright cities there. To this day I miss it so much ( not the prostitutes) but the general feel. Ironic that to me it was going to another world that I am fond of but for the young there they all want to leave for cities.

The more I read about overseas sex workers the more I want to do a back packing trip through Asia so I can go see for myself and see if the media has really skewed it as much as many say it does.

A great attitude. I think it is rare that articles are written using first hand experiences. It is usually liberal arts majors listening to each other in an echo chamber and writing down the gobbledygook that they hear.

Having said that, I have never tried the barber shop scene, because from what I've read online it us usually a sub-sub-par experience. And that's from pooners not pink journalists.

@the Meat Market!!!lol
this article seems balanced and realistic. the statistics seem close to what what we would expect to see.

while media do skew numbers of sex trafficking this doesn't seem to be the case here. they use the term sex worker and sex worker advocate which simply reflects a respect for what sex workers intertnationally fighting for.

from what my chinese friends have told me, this sounds like an accurate description of the conditions there. it is not that much different from here if you think about it. especially in terms of age brackets of sex workers, where sex worker work and their ability to earn money. the reasons for selling sex are also familiar. the story of the woman whose child has leukemia in particular resonates. i have known people in the industry for very similar reasons.

were they forced? or did they make a choice based on the best options availible to them? to sell sex or starve...to sell sex or watch your child die...

should people be put into those positions where they are forced to make these choices? no

but that is the world we live in. in canada many workers on street and in some cases indoors are dealing with the same kinds of choices.

the police violence they face is something we also share in canada and it also affects mostly the low end or street level workers more so than high end or indoor workers.

great article!

Have you ever been to Asia to meet with workers in these conditions? I think it would be very interesting to go there and meet them and chat with them and get to know them a bit. Could turn into a justification for a back packing trip!
no, and i can't really afford to travel. i bought a business last year and am working full out 7 days a week....i like it though! and still see clients of course.

i have met workers who have come here to visit us from calcutta, thailand, laos, burma and cambodia...where else,...south africa, israel, sweden, phillipines....and of course from new zealand, australia, the US, england, france, scotalnd, ireland, germany, netherlands....russia, austria, dominican republic.....

the desiree alliance are hosting a conference in las vegas at the end of this month i believe and there would be an opportunity to meet workers from far away places at that event...

but yes, it would be a cool trip. i would think you should learn some mandarin first...could be dicey to go on your own as well considering what kind of corruption exists there....
