Google's Vint C*rf warns of 'digital Dark Age'

Vint C*rf, a "father of the internet", says he is worried that all the images and documents we have been saving on computers will eventually be lost.

Currently a Google vice-president, he believes this could occur as hardware and software become obsolete. He fears that future generations will have little or no record of the 21st Century as we enter what he describes as a "digital Dark Age".

Our life, our memories, our most cherished family photographs increasingly exist as bits of information - on our hard drives or in "the cloud". But as technology moves on, they risk being lost in the wake of an accelerating digital revolution.

"I worry a great deal about that," Mr C*rf told me. "You and I are experiencing things like this. Old formats of documents that we've created or presentations may not be readable by the latest version of the software because backwards compatibility is not always guaranteed. "And so what can happen over time is that even if we accumulate vast archives of digital content, we may not actually know what it is."

Singles Night at Safeway

Single and hungry for love? An event being held at a Winnipeg grocery store may be just the ticket.

After attempting the traditional pickup spots, Winnipegger Lucas Andrich saw a new opportunity to take advantage of a real “meat market” and is organizing a singles event night at a local Safeway grocery store next month. After all, what better place to find that perfect someone to suit your tastes than a local supermarket?

“Me and my friend were talking and he thought it would be a good idea if there were more singles at Safeway when we shopped,” Andrich, 30, told CTV Winnipeg. “So, I made the event and everyone else apparently likes the idea.”

Dubbed “Singles Night at Safeway,” the event is scheduled for 7 p.m. until closing time on March 3. The idea has already taken off online, with nearly 1,000 people saying on Facebook that they'll attend.

Winnipeggers looking for love have been told to tie a bag on their grocery cart to identify themselves as single. And, there’s a charitable component: Bring a food item for a local food bank, then start searching for a new squeeze.

Google warns Blogger users over porn

Google has warned users of its Blogger platform that blogs containing sexually explicit images and videos will be made private on 23 March.

None of the blogs will be deleted, but they will no longer be publicly visible, the tech giant says.

People currently posting adult content are advised to either remove it or make their blogs private themselves.

Blogs created after the March deadline may be taken down if they contain adult material, the updated terms state.

Under the updated adult policy terms, nudity will be allowed on Blogger blogs only if it "offers a substantial public benefit, for example in artistic, educational, documentary, or scientific contexts".

Bloggers are already asked to use the tag "adult" if their site contains explicit material, which means a warning page appears before the site can be accessed.

Under its current terms, Google reserves the right to add that tag itself even if the blog author disagrees.

In 2013 the company banned Blogger sites from carrying adverts for adult websites.

‘Star Trek 3′ to shoot in Vancouver this summer

Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto are landing in Vancouver this summer to make the third chapter in the rebooted Star Trek movie franchise.

Cameras are scheduled to roll at Vancouver Film Studios and at various locations in B.C. from June 1 to the end of September.

Justin Lin (Fast and Furious 6) is directing the still-untitled film, which also has Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin and John Cho reprising their roles.

The movie is scheduled to be released in July 2016, just in time for the 50th anniversary of the original Star Trek TV series starring Montreal native William Shatner.

The decision to make Star Trek 3 in Vancouver was revealed last October.

A favourable exchange rate, combined with federal tax credits of 16 per cent and provincial tax credits of up to 33 per cent, have made the province a popular location for Hollywood productions.

Production of the new Star Trek movie will pump millions in the B.C. economy and provide work for hundreds of locals.

The Hubble Space Telescope is about to celebrate its 25th birthday.

After its ignominious start in 1990 when it launched with a mirror that could not focus properly, the space telescope has gone on to notch a list of remarkable discoveries. From confirming there were gigantic black holes in space to refining the age of the Universe - Hubble has had a part in many of the big breakthroughs in modern astronomy.

The fact that it still does peerless science is down to all those visits from astronauts who repaired and upgraded its systems. After the retirement of the space shuttle, those sorts of interventions are no longer possible but Hubble is said to be in superb shape.

For 2015, the Guinness Records recognizes the Peak 2 Peak gondola as the holder of the “highest cable car above ground” and “longest unsupported span between two cable car towers” records.

The Peak 2 Peak has also been named a Canadian Signature Experience by the Canadian Tourism Commission and it has been recognized as the No. 1 landmark in Canada by Trip Advisor’s Travelers’ Choice Awards.

Google backs down over Blogger porn rule change

Google has changed its mind about forcing sexually explicit blogs on its Blogger platform to become private.

Earlier this week, the firm warned bloggers that blogs containing sexually explicit images and videos would be made private on 23 March.

After "a ton of feedback" the firm has decided to continue with its current policy instead, it says.

Explicit blogs must continue to identify themselves as "adult". This means a warning page is shown before readers are transferred to the site. Google also reserves the right to add an "adult" tag to Blogger blogs if it feels the description is appropriate.

The "acceptable use" policy link currently redirects users to a posted message which reads: "We've had a ton of feedback, in particular about the introduction of a retroactive change (some people have had accounts for 10+ years), but also about the negative impact on individuals who post sexually explicit content to express their identities.

"So rather than implement this change, we've decided to step up enforcement around our existing policy prohibiting commercial porn." As long as bloggers have correctly identified their adult blogs they need take no further action, the message adds.

Google had originally proposed forcing existing explicit blogs to go private from next month, and said it would potentially take down blogs created after its 23 March deadline.

Snowing money? Man ships Boston snow from yard

A Massachusetts man is capitalizing on the snow-ravaged Northeast by selling and shipping snow to customers, friends, family and enemies in warmer climates.

And with snowstorms hitting the Northeast weekly, it just keeps snowing money for Kyle Waring, the founder of ShipSnowYo.com.

Waring told Boston.com that he and his wife were shoveling their yard just north of Boston when they came up with the idea to send snow to friends and family. In case you were planning to send more snow to areas already hit hard, that's not an option. According to the website, they "will not ship snow to any states in the Northeast! We're in the business of expunging snow!"

Waring originally offered 16.9-ounce snow-filled water bottles for $19.99, but found that the snow melted by the time it reached its destination. The solution: six pounds of snow for $89 and a 10-pound option for $119. He told Boston.com he's been selling out of the product. Waring says he can get the product to the customer within 20 hours and while it still melts, there is usually enough for 10 or 15 snowballs, according to Boston.com.

Here is what Jeff Foxworthy has to say about Canadians, during a recent appearance...

Here is what Jeff Foxworthy has to say about Canadians, during a recent appearance at Caesars in Windsor :

If someone in a Home Depot store
Offers you assistance and they don't work there,
You may live in Canada .

If you've worn shorts and a parka at the same time,
You may live in Canada .

If you've had a lengthy telephone conversation
With someone who dialed a wrong number,
You may live in Canada .

If 'Vacation' means going anywhere
South of Detroit for the weekend,
You may live in Canada .

If you measure distance in hours,
You may live in Canada .

If you know several people
Who have hit a deer more than once,
You may live in Canada .

If you have switched from 'heat' to 'A/C'
In the same day and back again,
You may live in Canada .

If you can drive 90 km/hr through 2 feet of snow
During a raging blizzard without flinching,
You may live in Canada .

If you install security lights on your house and garage,
But leave both unlocked,
You may live in Canada .

If you carry jumper cables in your car
And your wife knows how to use them,
You may live in Canada .

If you design your kid's Halloween costume
To fit over a snowsuit,
You may live in Canada .

If the speed limit on the highway is 80 km --
You're going 95 and everybody is passing you,
You may live in Canada .

If driving is better in the winter
Because the potholes are filled with snow,
You may live in Canada .

If you know all 4 seasons:
Almost winter, winter, still winter,
and road construction,
You may live in Canada .

If you have more miles
On your snow blower than your car,
You may live in Canada .

If you find -2 degrees 'a little chilly',
You may live in Canada .

If you actually understand these jokes,
and forward them to all
your friends,
you definitely are Canadian and proud to be.
