after watching youtube videos I was wondering, when can police ask for an id.
if you go through a checkpoint/roadblock do you need to show your driver's license?
or can they demand you identify yourself for no reason

I’m assuming you are watching the YouTube videos. Those are all US laws and a RCMP posted one discussing the differences in Canadian law. She was saying if you do not provide DL when requested you will most likely be charged.

The ones that surprised me are the DUI checkpoint. Some drivers got way with declining to provide ID and were told to get to continue their trip. That would never fly in Canada.

Any driver can be required to produce proof of ownership, insurance and license status in most provinces.
Driving a motor vehicle is a privilege, not a right. Hence the requirement for a license.
I know of instances of drivers not being able to produce a license on the spot and getting a pass.
Police officers have a range of discretion depending on the situation. They also have liability: for instance if they allow a suspected drunk driver to drive home and that driver kills someone.

Ya I watch these videos and it just seems the camera operator is trying to start something for no reason all in the name of protecting everyone's freedom.

They call themselves auditors and it’s tedious to watch.

I prefer the civilians who run circles around cops when it comes to the 1st and 4th constitutional amendments. Things like doing illegal searches or busting down a door without a warrant.

Then there’s this guy busting in without a warrant.
