vancouverman and myself are off to the range again this week for PSG #2. Theres something about putting bullets through paper that we can't get enough of.

If you ever wanted to experience what if feels like to hold and shoot semi-automatic handguns, or blast away with a rifle. Nows the time.

If theres anyone who wishes to participate please PM vancouverman or myself.

Be adviced that the range is in the mountains so a vehicle is a must. Transportation could be provided depending on circumstances. --- Kev

I'm interested in rifles. Sniper rifles to be exact. High powered scope. With silencer. High impact armour piercing rounds. Good to about 800 yards.

Do they have such things?!?!?!?

The american forces use a 7.62 cartridge[ nato standard] for sniper rifle, they claim hits at 6ooo m. The canadians use .50 cal, hits to 10,000 m. A 7.62 is same as a 308 cal. winchester. You will have trouble finding a range that is not military to use a sniper rifle. A sniper rifle on normal ranges 150 t0 300 m, would be like using a telescope to look across street

Well, sort of. The Fins make what is considered the best (i.e. most accurate) sniper rifle in the world, the Sako TRG-22. The highest caliber available would be a .308. The TRG-42 is a .338 caliber. Its a bolt action rifle with either a 5 or 10 round magazine. A Winchester silencer is available. The comes standard with a silent safety switch (so that your 'prey' does not hear the annoying 'click' when removing the safety). The effective range of this fine weapon is 1100 meters. In the right hands, namely mine, a talented individual could shot the ass end out of a hummingbird at about a mile. You can mount either a standard day or night scope on the top of the receiver. She's a killing machine, hitrack. This little angel will get the job done for you.

Some might suggest that the US Army's new 25mm XM-109 has more range. True enough. The 109 is accurate to about 2500 meters. But the damn thing weights 33 pounds, while the TRG-22 is barely 10 lbs. You can carry a TRG for yourself and two more for your best friends, with a couple of pounds of jerky as a snack and still be totting less than one XM-109. Give me the Finnish rifle anyday.

AM< the canadian forces use 50 cal. The USA offered The Silver star to two canadian snipers that were in Afgan, !0,000 m hit ,taliban official, a new military record, 308 is good, but at 1100 m any centre fire with good scope would do, Give me the 50 and I`ll hit at 3000 m

Savage - will you stand behind me while I try to aim at the paper target ? I mean really, a gal might need some help with a big gun ? :D

That all depends on how well you can handle the recoil. Wouldn't want to get knocked in the head. :p

Yup

For 800 yards you just need a good hunting rifle. If you were to buy new that would set you back about $2000CA to $3000CA for the rifle and another $1000CA for the scope. If you want to shoot farther than that then check out. SniperCountry

For the armour piercing cartridges thats another matter. You can't even buy those (legal) in the States, and if you were caught with them up here or down there... "Don't pass go, just go directly to jail."

Who do you have your sights on Hitrack? Anyone we know?LOL

I have never shot with a Tikka, but I know they are fine weapons. Fine oil-treated walnut stock, free-floating barrel and about 9 lbs. All at a reasonable price. Am I right? Damn, I really need to get one of those.

I paid $300 for the rifle used. My rifle had a 22" barrel and weighted closer to 7 lbs with a 2 pound trigger pull. There was a varmint version of same class of rifle and it had a 26" barrel and weighted closer to 10 lbs.

I miss that rifle. I crashed on my dirtbike with the rifle on my back...and...well...you can imagine.

The Americans also use .50 cal, but it's best for very long range shooting. Canadians and Americans also use 7.62mm(.308 Winchester).

During Operation Anaconda, the Americans stepped into a snakes nest of Taliban and Al-Qaeda. Two 3-man sniper teams from the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry were brought in to help the American forces. During the battle, one of the sniper's made the then world record for the longest range confirmed kill(though this record may have been since broken in the Iraq fighting). The American's commander praised the sniper's and put them in for the Bronze Star with V. The Chretien government blocked the awarding of the medals, saying they didn't have a protocol for awarding foreign medals to Canadian troops(ignoring that Canadians serving with foreign units have been awarded medals in the past). One of the sniper teams members got into trouble for insubordination shortly afterwards, but this past year the remaining five snipers were finally awarded their medals(along with about twenty some officers. No mention was made what the officer's did to deserve being awarded a medal).

Below is a link to sniper rifle info.

I loved firing rocket launchers, fibreglass, disposible throw aways,go through a tank with a AP round at 300 m. I heard in Cambodia you can go to range and fire loads of stuff, machine guns, heavy and light, gernades,AK47 and just about anything .. Its run by army to make money, a real trip for people never in forces.

in the latest issue of "guns & weapons for law enforcement" they review the H-S Precision FBI HTR .308 (and before Kev will ask me... HTR in this case means Heavy Tactical Rifle ). 43inches and 16 pounds ( when with scope, mag, and tripoid ) makes it for a heavy one. Price tag $2400 without optic.
Review is good....
In the same issue, they have a review of Patriot Arms .223 Urban Sniper rifle. What is interesting, this rifle is available in calibers from .22 rimfire to .375 H&H Magnum
ohhhhh ... gimmie one
