New Years Eve brings up lots of memories for me. Sure there was the the where I was on certain New Years Eve's and whom I was with etc. Romance, desire for romance, getting laid etc etc. I used to be able to recite where I was on Dec 31st for many years. If I pushed my brain cells I could certainly do it again. New Years in Tahiti, yes that was a trip with all the hot Tahitian women doing their dances or in Banff with a group that were all about couple swapping etc.

I digress.

The one event for me that sticks in my mind was the Montreal Canadiens VS the Soviet Red Army playing to a 3 - 3 Tie. I watched it til its final conclusion and my friends were pissed since I would not leave until the game was finished.

This game sealed my love of hockey forever. It was played by two amazing teams at the top of their skills, without intervention by Zebra's and there was no circus shoot out at the end of it.

Two amazing hockey teams bar none.

I remember sitting and watching both my Dad and my Grandfather sitting and watching the game with tears in their eyes. The true Champions from the NHL vs The true Champions from Russia.
My Grand Dad was cheering for Russia and my dad for Les Canadiens.

One of the Best hockey games played at that time for both teams. I wouldn't say best game of all time. There are soo many others that come to mind.
You cant have a hockey thread on this board without peyton anders' weighing in. Even though it was before her time, i'm sure she has the best insight into the game :)

Thank you Badbadboy, Such a great game . I was 8 at the time but I can recall the tension in the house as the shots on the goal kept being racked up and my dad and everyone thinking that it was impossible for Tretiak to keep up . He was amazing ! Everyone at school who wanted to play goalie wanted to be him from that point on . Dryden under pressure was great but Tretiak had that something else ...during that game anyway . Kharlamov became an household name as well for his speed and skills . But talk about a deception that my Canadiens were not able to win that night . The sorrow lingers !!! LOL

Back when goalies had to make fuckin' saves and not just stand there looking like overinflated Michelin Men.

I wasn't around yet to watch this players but wish I was. My dad and uncles have so many great stories about these great Habs and Russians players. Also I always loved Howie Meeker's analysis, he knew how to break down a game.

I remember that game, it was great one. Habs out shot Red Army 37 to 13, Tretiak was unbelievable.
I think there were better games however.
Game 8 of the 72 CANADA-USSR series, Game 3 1987 Canada Cup, Both Gold Medal games of the 2002 SLC Olympics.

Correct, there may have been better games but this New Years I was reflecting on great games from years gone.

Let's agree that this is the best tie game

I was also thining those games tho' I've only seen film of 1972.I'd include the 2010 Olympics with the 2002 Olympics for nat'l pride.

Also, any Stanley Cup winning game for Les Habs(I may be a bit biased there, lol)

Really? Really? No idea about what it actually takes to play the position. The athletic ability alone.

What a pointless video.

Let's see how well Brodeur or Luongo would fare in a sumo match. Or how a horse might fly a plane.

Just look at the size of the goalies and the small equipment compared to now. That large equipment is also probably lighter than the 70's gear, even though it's twice the size.

I never denied the athletic ability, but if modern goalies wore the old gear in a game how well do you think their stats would hold up? They rose hell when the pads wee reduced a fraction.

I'm not alone in my opinion. The NHL is reducing goalie pads and here's Jacques Lemaire - Jacques Lemaire, who averaged 30 goals per season over his 12-year career with the Montreal Canadiens (1967-79), said it is harder to score now than ever. Lemaire points to the physical dimensions of modern goalies and the size of their equipment.

Ahhh, thank you for that blast from the past Mr. Badbadboy.
Just hearing the names of the Hockey Legends brought chills to the spine.

I really miss the clean lines of the rink and boards... meaning NO corporate sponsorship / advertising logos. So much clutter.

Peace.

I agree, its like a three ring circus with all the visual clutter in arenas these days.

I used to make monthly trips to Montreal and would pick up tickets to see the Habs play in the Forum. Now that place was electric even with a dull game. The seats were jammed close together, the inclines were steep compared to the Pacific Coliseum or Rogers arena and everyone watched every play intensely. Thing was the Forum was a bit of a dump but it was the place to be.

Funny, I saw Rocket Richard one night when I was leaving the Forum after the Habs had lost to St Louis in a snoozer. I said to Rocket "tough game to watch tonight, Rocket" to which he deferred it to as "they are over paid bums".

Agreed.
I remember every hockey fan was talking about that game for days.
A lot of the Russians wanted to play in the NHL after that tour, but Tikhinov wouldnt let them go.
Can you imagine the likes of Trektiak, Larionov, Krutov, etc. playing here in their prime?
I was super impressed with the womens gold medal game (2002) because the yanks bullied the olympic officials into changing the Finnish ref for an american. The yank ref penalized team CANADA 14 times, we won anyways!

Whenever someone bring up the 72 Summit Series, my thoughts turn to the Bobby Clarke slash that took out of Valeri Kharlamov. Definitely not the proudest moment in Canadian hockey history and may have altered the final result, IMHO...

I was 15 at the time and remember my dad commenting on how Bobby Clarke was nothing more than a thug and certainly not a man anyone should want to emulate. I remember trying to defend Clarke. I was wrong.

And I think that it did alter the final result. I believe Clarke has admitted that was the reason for his assault to begin with.

Heard so many stories about how dirty the Flyers of the 70's were. When they played an exhibition against the Red Army team in 76 didn't they bully their way to victory?

yep... :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1976_Philadelphia_Flyers%E2%80%93Red_Army_game

from the article:

The game was notable for an incident where, after a body check delivered by the Flyers' Ed Van Impe, CSKA's top player, Valeri Kharlamov, was prone on the ice for a minute. When officials did not call a penalty, the Red Army coach, Konstantin Loktev, pulled his team off the ice in protest. Flyers' Chairman Ed Snider told CSKA to return to the ice and finish the game, which was being broadcast to an international audience, or the Soviet Hockey Federation would not get paid the fee to which they were entitled. They eventually complied and lost 4–1.
