maybe i need to brush up on my stringray anatomy, but these barbs stay attached to the tail when it flails it, right?? There not like wasps where the barb/stinger detaches are they??

The barbs are made of modified cartilage and although they normally stay attached to the tail of the stingray, they sometimes do break off on impact especially if they are from a larger animal.

I think I'm rehashing what people have already said...

OK, I really don't understand what the big deal is here, and why so many people seem to be getting their knickers in a twist over this guy... It seems pretty clear to me that Steve Irwin's heart was in the right place with wanting to promote conservation and teach people about animals, but it also seems pretty clear to me that he was an idiot in the way he went about it. He took stupid, unneccessary risks, and it was only a matter of time before some beastie did him in.
I never watched his shows; but from what I’ve heard, read and seen on the news, there was a method to his madness. Reportedly, he believed that conservationism would never catch on long term as a movement unless there was a push to teach kids to have a love of nature and involve them in its preservation at an early age. A grass roots movement, if you will. To that end, he used an extreme degree of showmanship to get them to watch him as well as to get them excited about the issues and about nature and animals. Because let’s face it: kids don’t like watching traditional documentaries with the deep voice narrating with great solemnity about the mating rituals of the red-chested cockatoo of the West Indies; it’s dry material to sit through. And it seemed to have worked as dr. pepper has already attested to.

So, I think that he understood that he was taking great risks with his life; but that it was a risk worth taking for a cause that he, apparently, felt passionately about.

I never ONCE said he provoked the animal that killed him. I said that he had a history of provoking, teasing and causing animals he worked with to panic and it was not surprising he died due to interacting with one. At no time did I say I am glad he died, or gloat over his family.
I think that was the original intent of her post. Of course, you’re not glad that he’s dead nor are you trying to gloat over his family and, yes, he did take risks in his occupation. However, to come out and say, after a man’s passing, that “well, if you play with fire, you’ll get burned” or “well, it’s not surprising, he did provoke animals” or “well, he deserved it because he did this and that” is kind of inappropriate and seems to serve little purpose except to shit on a deceased individual.

holy sheeit

I actually agree with Smackyo.

The dude took chances and new the risks as well as the benefits to society. I agree that it is whacky a stingray got him....but when you really think about it, maybe not so whacky. The guy was so good with animals on land - by that, I mean he knew how pick up on their cues etc. that I doubt a land critter would have got him.

Seems to me, that a "freak" accident was the only way this guy was going to bite it. I also agree that all the sympathy should be directed to his children.

ok fine how's this:

OH WOE IS ME! My idol has departed this mortal plane! I am so depressed and distraught, let's make his death a national freaking holiday! His shit had no discernable odor, and his piss must have tasted like fine wine! I love Steve whatshisname!
Now say 10 Holy CRIKIES! And never again stray of the path of his righteousness. When you see any kind of animal you as a true believer must pounce on it and then wrestle with it all in his hallowed name of protecting the creature. And it helps to have a video camera. :D

OK, then go ahead and risk your life! But don't hurt anyone, including animals in the process. Don't risk your kid growing up as an orphan and your wife becoming a widow.

There was another guy who played with grizzlies in Alaska. He and his girlfriend were eaten by them in the end. He was an idiot, talking to them, singing to them; he said they are not dangerous at all, and he paid with his life. He died a horrible death, and ended up proving the opposite of what he set out to prove.

Well, that guy was courageous and lived on the edge, and he risked nobody else's life, but his own.

Erwin exploited the animals for his own selfish purposes. People who love animals don't hurt them in any way.
Anita,
Why do you delete your posts ,shortly after you write them, so often? I mean it's a really annoying habit you have. Is it because you review them and decide that what you wrote isn't appropriate? If so, why not take a little extra time to think about what you write prior to posting it? I really am curious on why you do this?

Regards,

A SAVAGE LUST GARDEN
Well sir.... I don't like it

Let me see if I can get this right...

A person who joins the army and dies during his battle will be a hero. ( As he should be)

A person who dedicates his life to education and conservation and dies as a result is an idiot.

Perhaps if any of you can commit yourself to something bigger than yourself or try to, you wouldn't be saying this.

I guess it's easier to make fun of someone than take a different course of action for your life in any area.

I will add something here that was ''deleted'':)rolleyes: ) in the last thread:
SHAME.

She is not the only one who deletes her posts like that. As an advertiser, I can see so many people other than her that delete. What does this have to do with anything?
