what i find so amusing is that there is so much controversy about a book that takes some fact and adds a lot of fiction by people who base their beliefs upon a book that takes some fact and adds a lot of fiction ...

in History, it is entirely appropriate to analyse an historical event or person using a process called 'counterfactuals' -- which, as it implies, takes a known historical person and event and changes them by the use of 'what-if' scenarios ...

What if the Greeks had lost to the Persians? Would we have democracy? Arts? The Olympics?

What if Hitler had been killed as a Corporal (he was wounded) in the First World War? Would it have prevented the Holocaust?

So What if Jesus did marry Mary and have kids? Would we not have Christianity? The Crusades? The Inquisition? Witch Trials? Massacres of Aboriginal Peoples?

Kind of like those alternate endings you get on some of the DVD movies.

I'm almost through reading the Da Vinci Code. Just a few chapters to go. Although the book was an interesting read the thought of Jesus being married, along with many other ideas that Brown is trying to sell as factual is total rubbish. However a quote from the DVC, "the greatest story ever told is the greatest story ever sold."

We have to admit DB did a great job with this book be creating controversy. He got those who already despise him to read it, along with millions of others. 70 million copies sold, a major motion picture released today. More power to him.

My favourite quote from the book was from Sir Leigh Teabing. "My friends i'm far more influential in the civilized world than here in France." Bwhwaah

The Province today has reviews from different sources on the Da Vinci Code 'the movie,' and there not good. I think i'll wait until it comes out on the movie channel.

I here a good read is Deception Point (2001) by Dan Brown. I think this will be my next book unless members speak against it otherwise.

Da Vinci code is interesting read but I think of it as an alternate ending to a fictonal masterpiece called the bible.
It's like someone a couple of thousand years later writing a book on what would happen if Anakin decided to help Mace Windu defeat Darth Sidious ... would he still fulfill the prophecy of bringing balance to the force?

Deception Point and Digital Fortress are both ummm- lets see. not that good.

As for the DaVinci code.,...... it is just a work of fiction. A "page turner" a light summer read.... bu treally all this hype about it bein ght e downfall of western civilisation and the end of Christianity is - I think - a weeeee bit overblown......

ie no one expects the vatican to be blown up with antimatter do they??? So why all the belief in this book too?

Cheers

I read the book and totally enjoyed it. It's the first fiction I have read in years. Don't normally take time for novels. Just remember that it is a novel, nothing mentioned in DVC hasn't been studied before. I am looking forward to the film and am curious as to how Howard will portray all the 'thought and thinking' portions of the book.
Will report my observations of the film later this weekend.

Saw the movie already - enjoyed it. Not a fast paced chase flick, lots of dialogue, would have been interesting seeing it without having read the book to see what I would have thought. Three out of four stars.

I'm glad people here are smart enough to recognise that IT'S JUST A BOOK! Whiny Roman Catholics are all over the editorial pages bitching about being persecuted...maybe the church is still trying to control what we read and see.

Movie wasn't as good as the book but wasn't as bad as some critics have made it sound. If you see the movie without having read the book I think the characters will seem more shallow and two-dimensional. The book gives some background on the characters so you have a better idea what motivates them, which the movie seems to lack. The book was interesting because it showed the process involved in solving the clues left behind and gave you a sense of the difficulty and frustration experienced by Robert and Sophia, the movie made it seem too easy. Also I found Roberts explanations of symbolism especially in Da Vinci's works an interesting part of the book which wasn't a big part of the movie except for The Last Supper.

Overall I'd give it 5, maybe 6 out of 10, wasn't bad, wasn't great.

Interesting train of thought. Did you know that more wars, murders and violence have been done in the name of "Christ" than by any other name? Curious when Jesus was *supposed* to have been the Prince of Peace. To this day wars are still going on as they have for millenia.

Not that I want to spout propoganda on this board, but I can't help but mention that the Bible could very well be (in my opinion) fiction as well; so what's the difference between reading it, or some other modern book that seeks to refute the sacrity of the Bible.

That is what I thought too - it is fiction and entertainment (with a bit of historical fact thrown in). But when I mentioned this to some of my catholic friends, it does offend their faith. Their rebuttal is.." well, it is just a cartoon of the prophet Mohamed"...why all the furor over a cartoon?
