Where do I start .. with Microsoft or Apple....with Marconi or Bell .. \it may even go back farther .. But I will stay in the not too distant present ..

I just got this new computer ( yes I have two thread om it all ready lol) and I confirmed what i all ready knew .. Windows is just an over bloated operating system that needs some composition and maybe some descent programers that know what they are doing They need to start at the beginning like android operating system . But windows just keeps adding layers on layers and never weeding the old junk out I was using XP ,, Now I see Windows 7 and I could put on Windows 8 which has another layer .. and they built a new chip to handle it ...The other thing is .. the operating systems and all the add on programs that they include with new computers take up a hell of a lot of space Like 40 to 50G that is why the are giving you 500G HD and up ..But there is one other reason for the bloated operating systems .. Consumerism !!!!!!

They want you to pay for data storage off line .. Yap that is the pitch .. It starts with having to get a place to store your back up for your computer restart .. Have you noticed you don't get any start up DVD with your new computer .. Because it takes about 10 or more just to load the basics .. So when you want to store back up reboot you need ..an other hard drive either in your machine or some where else .. Guess what off site storage is the new thing .. Norton is offering 25G free off site storage ,, with your Norton antivirus , But that only insures that you buy Norton every yr , to keep your stuff stored with them.

And then there is all the other .. Apple cloud, Acer cloud, Google cloud...and a number of privet companies .. all giving free trial storage of 5 to 20 G .. But you soon find out that you need more and that costs . And that is where the conspiracy .. They have your data , all your info .. in fact they have been planing this for some time .. Quietly large storage facilities have been springing up all over the world ,, waiting for the day that they knew was coming .. Nortel saw it but was just a little too early .. but i suspect ,the infrastructure and switches that they set up are what is being used to day to transfer your data to storage servers all over the world .. Where did I hear about it ,, well from an investment news letter .. telling about the companies that are going to go big because the Iphone and smart phones and tables .. Because they have such limited storage they will be storing some where else .. and paying for it .. And that is what it all about .. business , making more money ,, with a captive clientele .. Every one on three yr data plans .. and using the internet ..

Was Steven Jobs in on this .. You beat.. and Bill Gates most definitely But they were just sell out .. that sold there belief in technology and the power of the computer to the people with real power .. just sold it for a few billion in gold ...

As long as we are willing to ride the consumer wagon buy the latest and greatest they we will have to keep paying and we will all so lose our privacy , lose our independence and loss our freedom .
We may even loss every think we hold dear and think is important . Because we store them on out computers and in off line storage depots. Where Government and privet companies can snoop , or thieves can hack.. And the final irony . all the data could be lost with a virus or a magnetic pules . Every thing that we think our society is , our life is .. gone in a blink..

I was with out a computer for a week.. I did not really miss it .. Yes I still had my smart phone and \i worried about my pictures i had on my old HD.. I even missed online banking .. But i think I can let go of it too .. and that is what we may have to do.. I know we want to hang on to the illusion of life , and society .. We want to leave a remnant of who we were .. But the way this world is set up now ,, there will not be very much preserved of who was here or who we were .. It is a throw away society .. and they way we store our memories is the most vulnerable to destruction .. There won't been any paper trail or library books .. .and no memories on the memories drive .

Hey Max...I am no computer expert by a long shot....and reading your posts usually give me vertigo...

Go buy yourself an external hard drive...back up original settings eg. operating systems...save you in case of crash to restore to original settings...

Then get into a regular schedule of backing up your files....for me it is every month or two as I don't add too much data that needs to be saved...maybe if I take lots of photos one week, I will back up right away...

The external hard drive is only hooked up to your computer when you want to....It is not affected by day to day bugs...and has heaps of storage space...so if your PC is getting full, just download the hefty files to your external drive and clear up the space on your PC's memory...If you want to view whats on the hard drive, just hook it up.

Mine cost about $90.00 about 4 years ago.

One of the key selling points of windows is the ability to use programs that are over a decade old.

Computers are pretty easy now days.
I started with win. 95 now win. 7 is pretty efficient and easy.
Brain less actually.

Banking stock trades, emailing with people looking up things.
I don't know what the hell I would do with out a computer.

And like some one said get a plug in drive, there real cheap and have like a t of storage space.
I have a half a terabyte on this machine and its now where near half full.

And when this machine goes belly up I had it two years who cares, I will just pick up another cheap one.

Ok, first thing is you do not need to use all stuff that comes on a new computer. Don't like Norton? Don't use it. You have the ability to uninstall all of this. Take some time, become an informed consumer. We live in such an age of information, that ignorance is now a choice.

Now, if you do not trust all the online storage options, you have a choice of offline storage options. You can easily purchase external drives. These have become such a consumer item, that you find them in Costco, Walmart, or even your "grocery" stores like Superstore and Save-On foods. You can store your files, photos, videos, or anything else on those external drives.

Or, you can balk at technology like your above rant does, and keep your photos printed in photo albums. You can keep your privacy, keep your independence, and keep your freedom (which you never lost as you are free to choose to do this). Now, should the unthinkable happen, and you lose your stuff to a fire, then those photo albums are GONE. You can also lose them to floods, smoke, earthquake, or any other natural or unnatural disaster. Just like your will lose computers over time due to failure. Now if you embraced the online storage conspiracies, your files would be safe, stored offsite. Again, your choice.

before ranting about how insecure these storage facilities are, or how they invade your privacy, you would be best served to find some proof of this first, other than here say, or what you think could happen. Change happens. You can choose to embrace that change, learn about it, and use it, or you can choose to stick to old methods that are proven. But don't complain when the world leaves you behind and the learning curve is too steep because you didn't keep up.

I have switched from PC to Mac's and use the Mac iCloud a lot. You get 5 GB free and then the yearly price goes up exponentially from there...

I have two 2 TB backup drives plus a USB powered back up portable drive for when I am in the office and back up daily.

Since I am frequently out of the office and use the cloud I need to keep documents available incase a client needs to see something that may not be on my laptop or iPad.

I recently found on kickstarter a company that makes a "Transporter" which connects to your router and from anywhere in the world you can pull down whatever documents you have stored on it. I have a 2 TB version on order. This is all free without any storage fees etc. Just the cost of the hardware and their supporting software for Mac or Windows. Your own personal Cloud, now how cool is that?

Social media was just starting out, and things like youtube were just getting started. The browser wars were just kicking in, as well as the search engine wars. Yahoo and Google were at each other's throats. Information was not as easy to find, and internet shopping hadn't really caught on fully. Ebay was just starting out and global auctions were starting to catch people's eyes. For good or bad, it's the way that things evolved.

I'm not sure I agree about the ease of finding information. Yes, the search engines are easier to operate, but sometimes the pre filtering discards pertinent sites because they may have a contrary take on a subject. What I find even worse is I feel like I'm in a middle east bazaar every time a search result comes up with list of sites selling everything which might be related to my search. While we have been on guard against big brother censoring the internet, commercial interests have pretty well made much of the WWW useless.

i love my Acer and that is what i got as a new one .. hmmmmmm

Although I have be thinking of taking it back .. it is a 17.3 with i3 and w7
honestly it is not faster then my old one on XP

All so I had them do the set up .. and then checked it with on of those check up services ( which I think could easily be scams also because they all way tell you there is some thing wrong ..) itn this case .. H have 400 errors on my newly set up computer.

Then you get not program dices , or back up dices .. honestly i want to take it back .. get some thing with an i5 and windows 8..and maybe only a 15.3 screen they are a lot lighter 2.5 lbs lighter at least I have a week to do that

I hope you don't take my responses as personal attacks either. Computers are what I do for a living, so I'm always up on the latest technology. If you want a behemoth laptop, then an Asus G75 17" is top of the line. You can even get them with SSD, but that's going to run you about $1200. It will be lightening fast though.

All of these computers are going to come pre-built with bloatware though. You'll have to opt out of a lot of the crap they pre-install. Takes me about a good day to fix em up from new. Don't trust the monkeys at Best Buy geek squad and the like. They are pretty crappy at what they preach.

Of all the stories I looked at .. Staples has the best sulection in all price ranges .. Best buy had all the makes from every one .. but maybe only 3 identical configs no SSD Even future shop ..( I Know they are best buy) did not have the selection that staple had .. other stores in Vic may carry 4 or 5 models ,, And London Drug is big on Toshiba.. and some Sony

I can see where I should get on with a i5 at least,, and speed of 2.7 to boost of 3.4...or so.
8 DDR.and SSD and 500 or 750 HD.. . A 15.3 screen will be fine .. my 17.3 is to heavy
And get it with windows 8 all though I wounder if buying the 7 and then getting the up grade to pro .. is better .. if the mean the professional version or windows home pro.

MY ACER 2gen i3 ,with 2.4 mhz and 3 level 3 cash, 6ddr..and 750HD that seen to only have 680 on it with BT and all the stuff and windows 7....and only intel 3000 it was $499 I can get a Acer of Hp or I think a ASUS 15.3/i5/ wit boost to 3.1 / 8DDR/500HD /intel 40000. and windows 8..for the same price or up to $579

Of course I had them load windows . and optimize .. ( no transfer of data) and that cost 100 then 2 yr more coverage .. so with tax i am at $777

I see Costco .. some comparable .. i load the program I guess from the web and you get 2 yr warranty.. an other place I looked there price was a little higher then the by 30 or so and windows was loaded ..

But I all so notice that there are a few variation on the possessors so I all was have to keep an eye on all the specs .. many don't come with Blue tooth

With what I allready put out I could get more computer for less then that .. jut don't get extended warranty and load windows my self .. after seeing all the errors in the drives ,, and roooots ,, I guess i can't do any worst or get the one where they do charge for it being loaded ..

A notebook will always come pre-built with Windows already pre-installed. You will need to load nothing off the internet. Microsoft calls it the OOBE, or out-of-box experience.

Optimization involves going into control panel, choosing programs and features, then removing the programs you will not use (Opting out). From there, you install updates, download whatever antivirus you wish, and start to transfer data from your old to the new. If there is data transfer, then the $100 has value. If they are just running the OOBE, then $100 is $90 too much.

They are very short on details but if you dig a bit you will see that they are all silicon Valley players who have done stuff like this for major players in the past.

My whole thing was getting 5 GB free from Apple and then to get to 20 GB it was $50 a year. I have some data sheets and tech info that would eat that up in no time.

Being able to use the customer's wifi and pull down huge docs during a presentation is a step up for me. Many of my competitors are still saying "I will have to get back to you", while I will be able to have their info within a minute or so. I am actually considering having a few of these in places in Toronto and Ottawa so we (partners) can access all the files whenever we want. Pretty sweet really when you consider there no extra cost other than the actual hardware.

Those are not top of the line .. It would be nice to get some thing for 350 but they really have nothing in them and slow .. i fig with windows bloated programs i I need to be close to the better machines ..//

I not a geek .. I try to keep up to date when \i buy a new computer ,, but don't want to pay a reticules price .. for some thing that is all ready out dated by what in the pipe ..I know my first deck top I bought 2001.. was a Sony running ME( I was happy with ME compared to what was ) it was $2500 by the time all was said and done .. the hard drive went in 2006 that when i got an Acer .. one just like the one that went now but not the same .. \this was from a friend .. I had him put XP on it for me .. after I saw how Vista was 10X larger .... and now Windows 7 is 25 to 40 G with all the bloat wear .. Windows 8 even bigger ..

I edit pictures , would like to do auto cad if I find a program I like and may be get a graphics tablets .. to do some online illustrating . Also may be do some video editing .. That if the machine can handle all of this and b e a good price .. Maybe asking to much from a lap top

I thought speed was .. having i7 with SSD and a TB HD running @10000rpm and some radion 4 G graphics chip

THe funny thing is the computers to day are 10 X more powerful then a mini main frames that they had 20 yrs ago and they are bogged down with the over bearing windows programs

ten years a go Microsoft was talking about some thing called Long Horn that was going to be a an operating system that got ride of all the duplicate and triplicate command chains and operating systems .. Then it was dropped and now they just are adding on and adding on .. Where Vista used ... 100,000 MB 10 years ago ... Windows 8 is close to 25 GB if you get rid of the crap ... that is 250X bigger .. and that is why we need TGB HD or SSD

20 years ago there were processors running at 3Mhz and now it is 3Ghz..
