Burnaby instead of Vancouver Lai Thia on Edmonds- great tasting food without all the sugar, MSG, butter and crap that most restaurants use for flavour. Hot and spicy!!
s
For Vancouver a good place is Kalvin's on Victoria and about 34th. Same as above.

I think you really have to have some sort of categories, otherwise you fall into the trap of people's favorite foods, etc..

For Chinese - Kirin
For pure carnivore pleasure - Samba
For Japanese - Tojos
For Italian - Amarcorde
For Breakfast - Elbow Room
For late night tapas and tinis - Crime Lab
For Waitresses - Havana or Wazubi

Are you referring to Horizon's? I went there once and thought it was pretty good.

I sat on the floor part. the waitresses are so loud, lol. After a few warm sake's you don't notice them any more. the food, is omg-good, also might have been due to warm sake, but I think it is genuinely very good. Reasonably priced as well.

I would completely recommend for a casual first date. As long as you have reservations for the floor part. Just so people don't get confused though, it is Japanese, not white people bar food, lol

Downtown Vancouver
For late night tapas and tinis - Crime Lab
This place is LONNNNGGGGG gone. Fun atmosphere though.

A good replacement is Bin 941 on Davie and Bin 942 on Broadway and Granville. No Martinis though. Also try Lolita's on Davie. Very good South American food and drinks and open late too.

A great new place is "La Brasserie" a small, casual French-German bistro on Davie Street. Reasonable prices and well selected wines from Marquis Wine Cellars marked up about $10 a bottle...from the retail price!:)

And yes, Guu with Garlic is one of my faves too.

Define "best." To me, that means top notch food, service and ambiance.

Most of the restaurants listed thus far lack in one or more of those areas. There are tons of restaurants with amazing food, but the service is mediocre at best and the rooms are crowded and noisy, so I would hesitate to say they are the best.

As for my top picks:

1. Lumiere in its Rob Feenie days was absolutely polished in every way. I haven't been since Dale McKay took over, so I don't know how the food is these days. But I imagne the service is still as impeccable as ever.

2. Five Sails has been consistently exceptional every time I've gone. Not as good in cruise ship season, though, because all the obnoxious tourists ruin the atmosphere.

3. Il Giardino.

4. West.

Ooooo! Hittin' the Scotch last night with a vengeance, HMMDI?:D Not sure what you mean by that post but if I read it correctly, neither were reincarnates of The Crime Lab. Or maybe you hit the quote button and meant to give your vote for the best restaurants!?!?

Crime Lab? Nope, it is alive and well and on the sea wall at Denman Street. I was there less than a week ago.

I would say that all 4 are decent recommendations but by no means are they the best. I think they are more hype and for tourists (with the exception of Stephos) but are decent for their price point.
