One of the many things I enjoy about working midnight shift for five months each year is being able to listen to Coast to Coast AM on the radio. At its worst, it's amusing but it can also be quite interesting and thought provoking. The guests last night were Paul Guercio and George Hart, founders of something called The Merlin Project.

Merlin makes predictions on any number of subjects and one of the things discussed last night was the 2008 U.S. presidential election. To my surprise, Merlin is predicting the candidates will be Mitt Romney for the Republicans and John Edwards for the Democrats. At the present time neither of them can be described as a front runner but a lot can change in 18 months.
A potential big drawback for Romney is the fact that he is a Mormon. According to some studies, up to 50% of Americans still view the Mormon Church with some serious reservations. Anyone as old as myself will remember the great hubbub about John F. Kennedy becoming the first Roman Catholic president. Christian America tends to be largely Protestant and somewhat prone to view non-Protestants with suspicion, even today.
Guercio and Hart said that Hillary will be front runner for the Democrats but will be convinced to give up her presidential ambitions by party leaders who believe she is too much of a lightning rod for strong negative emotions and thus can't possibly beat the Republican candidate. In return for removing herself from the race, she'll be promised the position of Senate Majority Leader for as long as the Democrats control the Senate.
Time will tell how accurate Merlin is but I thought I'd get the prediction down in writing so that we can either scoff or marvel a year and a half from now.
