That time of year again, so how's your swing?

Got out of rainy NB and brought my clubs with me, how po-dunk is this place, when I went to the range she handed me an empty bucket, refused money and told me to pick up balls on the range and hit to my hearts content (it's a small range, only like 250 long and the width of a wide fairway). Safe to say I've now got blisters on top of blisters on my hands (good thing I did my pooning yesterday or else my hands would be useless, as opposed to just next to useless)

Happy to say after not golfing at all last year, Wedges are pretty dead on (sw pulls slightly as I try to swing too hard sometimes), 9,8, and 7 travelled as far as they should for me (still cant really control them though, they can be straight, fade or draw, apparently my mid-short game is like a box of chocolates) problem is my 6,5,and 4 only seemed to travel as far as my 7 (the trajectory just got lower and lower, same distance though), the driver.....I blocked it out cant recall what happened. Thankfully my rescue wood seemed as reliable as ever (seriously is there a better club to have confidence in other than your putter?)

So how are you making out?

I have played 2 rounds so far...an 18 and a 9.....so far my iron play is good and my short game is better and I have changed up my routine with my driver in that I turn in the clubface a shitload to try and counteract my vicious slice and this seems to be working as I have hit a bunch of solid smasheroonies off the tee and ended up in the middle of the fairway.

I am playing a round tomorrow with a freind who is a regular player at my poker game and who is also a pooner so it will be a good round no matter what I score.

This is pretty standard for most golfers. You won't start truly seeing a difference in distances with your long irons until you are consistently hitting them solid (middle of the club) and your club head speed is over 95mph.
Best advice put away the driver, 5 iron, 4 iron and hit what you hit well and that is your rescue club. It also makes your bag lighter.

I used to golf a lot, competitively for 20 years but just don't have the time anymore.

Best advice put away the driver, 5 iron, 4 iron and hit what you hit well and that is your rescue club. It also makes your bag lighter.

Unlike Eastern Canada Vancouver lacks quality Golf Courses especially those affordable and available to the pubic.
I believe that HT Gardner did a great job on Vancouver Golf Club and it is one of the best in Vancouver.
Shaughnessy is probably second best.
Capilano is over-rated not one of Thompsons best works, 3 par 5's in the first 5 holes is not good. Definitely the most scenic.
I would rank Semiahmoo as the best public course although it is not in the lower Mainland but close enough.

Hey Dg...sorry to hear about your early season struggles...

I usually score quite well early in the season before I remember all my bad habits :doh:

My best advice to you...take your 5,4,3 irons out of the bag and replace them with corresponding hybrid/rescue clubs.

Swing them like an iron, get the same or better distance, and they are much more forgiving on mis-hit shots.

Swing that driver nice and slow...keep your 3 or 5 wood...whichever works best...

Semiahmoo is a great track and I would also put Westwood Plateau up there however the last few years the maintenance of the course has really gone down hill. The new owner claims he is losing too much money with the golf course so has tried to get the course zoned for housing

I used to love golfing when I was younger but I haven't been on a course in probably 10 years. I want to get back into it this summer though. I'll be the guy working on his swing and waving at all you guys to play through

Don't these people realize that course maintenance is what makes a course IMHO.

Golf is a business and it is all about money. With over 80 acres dedicated to the golf course there is a lot of houses in that land. Westwood was likely built to allow the developers to sell all the houses at a premium. Now that all the houses are sold the value of the course is in real estate.

I used to carry my clubs until I bought a Clicgear 3.0 last year and I must say walking a course is a treat with one.

I enjoyed my round today though I did not break 100....I did hit a bunch of good solid smasheroonies off the tee and I made a few really good iron shots.....my playing partner asked/proffered the bet of $1 a hole and I accepted....he won more holes but I won more carryovers....at the end of the round I had to pay out $6 total so it was OK....I did win the 18th which was a carryover and I did it with a par.

I am looking forward to the rest of the season.

Just went over to victoria to play a couple rounds with some friends. I never thought we were going to play, and left my clubs in van...
My rentals ended up having no putter, and I had to putt right handed the whole time.

It also seems that I've developed a mean slice over the winter, took the better part of a round to get it reasonably under control. Lets just say I never broke 100 either

I should find a local group of people to play with that are as bad as I am.

Actually my short game's not all that bad. Par 3's make me happy... but I'll never be able to hit reasonably long shots off the grass if I keep sticking to them.

Am slowly getting back into the 'swing' of things. I got a TaylorMade R11 driver for Christmas, so have been busy getting used to how light it is (compared to the R9), and playing around a little bit with the weights and trajectory settings. Am hitting it really well so far, so looks like it's a keeper.
