Seems like the whole province is on fire right now, and it's even worse in AB and SASK.

Kudos to the firefighters that have the Joe Riche/Kelowna fire 100% contained within a few days of it starting!

Be extra special nice to the volunteer and paid firefighters and forestry service workers, helicopter and waterbomber pilots that are risking their own safety to protect our lives and property!

:clap2:

... and bitchslap any smokers you catch throwing live butts on the ground or out the window!

In all fairness to my fellow smokers, and this is not to defend anyone tossing a butt out the window or on the ground. Reflections from a piece of glass, shinny paper or metal will also start a fire in these conditions. Cars no longer have ashtrays, but you can buy one that fits in a cupholder at the dollar store. Be responsible!!

Campers not completely extinguishing their campfires causes many of them too. Several years ago, I found 4 smouldering campfires left unattended in the Okanagan back country in one summer!

Most of the fires we fight up here are started by lightning...Having said that, THERE IS NO EXCUSE when you discard a cigarette out your car window.
Put a cup of water in a Tim Hortons cup, and toss it in there for shit sakes. We have a busy enough time fighting the ones called Zap fires [lightning], so don't add to the workload.
It is my opinion that anyone caught tossing a lit cigarette out a window past May 15th should have to fight a forest fire for 3 days...They'd never do it again.
To add to my frustration, yesterday my team and I had to be airlifted out of a fire by a helicopter by lifelines...I was last ,because I was in charge..I was Voluntold into that position...The wind kicked up good and proper, and I'm sporting a nice unwanted, flame haircut, and burned hands because they were covering my pretty face.
The entire Province has a campfire ban....And they're not kidding when they say that.
If you cause a forest fire, and the funding falls short of the projected fire season budget....You could be billed for a large percentage of the fire fighting, even after the investigations.
That includes tossing a butt out of your car, and someone scribbling down your plate number.
So now I'm going to have a shower to wash the soot off myself, and cough up whatever I've inhaled today...On the positive side ,I won't have to brush my hair for a couple weeks.

Glad you're OK Sybian. A tree feller has been killed on the sunshine coast today. It super dangerous out there. My mom and her ex husband were both forest fire fighters in Washington back in the day. They both have lung problems and are really susceptible to pneumonia. It's a dangerous job for sure. My asthma has been acting up today. It's really awful to think about all of the animals that are trapped by the fires. It's so awful. Hopefully they get them under control soon.

BTW....Thanks for the thread...And everyone for their kind words.
It's also a bit overwhelming when we go into a town, and it's obvious to everyone we are Fire Fighters ,and we are the ones trying to keep it away from their homes...Nobody will let us pay for anything. So we try not to go into the towns unless we have too.
Because of the bettle kill trees there is plenty of feul to feed the Dragon right now.
Those crossed downed trees also trap animals and livestock, and we find whats left..It's very sad how many there are.
Lavinia...I raise my axe to your parents for a job well done, and from my heart.. I wish them well.

That might have something to do with the fact that the lower mainland was buried under a cloud of smoke all day.

Whoa, I checked outside about 30 min ago and it's pretty brutal air quality. I hope people with compromised breathing are taking plenty of precautions when going outside. Sunshine Coast's fire is still raging.

My friend was blowing an air mattress in his driveway and then we noticed the the air was coming out. The sun reflection on his truck highly chromed rim started the the small fire in his air mattress..... how crazy is that...

Lets hope some rain comes our way. Forcast doesn't look good though. TWN has a 60% chance of rain NEXT Monday. And knowing weather prediction, that % could be a lot lower by then.

At least the air quality is better this afternoon here on the island.

Thanks sybian and all the other firefighters trying to get things under control.

Of the 886 fires recorded by the BC Wildfire Service this season, 43% were human-caused. #firewatchbc

Thirsty crews battling B.C. wildfires getting emergency water from Labatt Beer

The company has shifted focus from beer to provide 48,000 cans of emergency drinking water to the thousands of residents and fire fighters affected by forest fires in Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Alberta. The company says they have the initial cans in a stockpile, but will produce additional water and ship as-needed.

“When we learn of a need like this one, we’re ready to deliver emergency drinking water instead of beer,” said Charlie Angelakos, Vice President, Corporate Affairs, in a press release.

“We want everyone in the area to know that our thoughts are with them as they seek safety and return the area to normal.”

The move is part of Labatt’s Disaster Relief Program, an initiative started in 2013 in response to the flooding in Alberta.

Last summer, Labatt provided Manitobans affected by flooding with emergency water supplies.

“Right now, Labatt’s priority is to leverage our systems and resources to get safe drinking water to the people and workers in affected areas of western Canada,” said Angelakos.

Cheers Labatts!
