THANK YOU DAD

I will always remember what you and your entire generation sacrificed so that we live in freedom.

I promise to teach my children, and in the future, my grandchildren to be grateful for your sacrifices

I was at the Cenotaph at Hastings and Cambie and it was great to see a large turn out.

It is nice to see that the turn outs are getting bigger and that more younger people are coming to the Remembrance Day ceremonies.

If you haven't done so already, take a couple of minutes and pay your respects to our fallen.

In Flanders Fields

By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I was also at the Cenotaph today and watched as many of the WWII vets proudly came in.
Some in wheel chairs,
Some limped,
Some walked slowly,
Others needed to stand at the side and watch.

But every one of them had that look on their face that you knew they were proud of what they did and rightfully so.

I also watch as the three generations that came after those vets stood a clapped as the vets marched by. Most of the observers have never had to face the horrors of war but were there to honour those that did.

We shall never forget.

In Winnipeg a week ago, veterans of WWII were awarded medals from the government of France for their efforts and bravery in helping to rid France and one town in particular of German occupation. Of the hundreds of Winnipeg soldiers that helped, only 30 or so remain as living history and testament of the event. It was humbling to see these veterans accept the award. To see the faces of these heroic vets as they accepted the medals was a pricesless moment in my life and one that I'll never forget. It brought it to life for me in a big way. So for them and all the other soldiers that have given us our freedom and way of life.......I THANK YOU !!!!!

Poppies...

I am always touched deep inside if I'm in Canada as Remembrance day approches. Seeing so many people wearing poppies is very touching.

As a veteran of the 1st Gulf War, I feel Veterans day in the US really does not mean as much to Americans as it does to Canadians.

I also feel bad for my father, who spent 26 years fighting the Cold War from the seat of a B-52. He never fired a shot in anger. All these Cold Warriors are the forgotten veterans.

BCV - you are so right.

US could take a lesson from Canada.

Memorial Day is the day to shop not a day to remember. How sad.

When I was at the Cenotaph today and we approached 11 o'clock, the planes did not take off from YVR. Could you imagine any airport in the US not allowing planes to depart for fear they would disturb the ceremonies.

I love the US but we should look to our Northern neighbours (sp) for a lesson on how to respect our armed forces.

The irony of all ironies...ABC affiliates are refusing to air the movie Saving Private Ryan in it's entirety, uncut, as they are afraid of FCC repercussions as a result of the violence and foul language.

The FCC is now being run by the son of Colin Powell, a career military man and a good one.

It's a whacked out world man....

I wonder what happens when the networks want to broadcast "The Passion Of The Christ" next Easter? You can bet there will be heavy pressure not to "dillute" the movie by censoring it.

If that movie had been about anyone but Jesus Christ, it would have been banned, or rated "X".
