I would expect a much more American solution involving guns.
The article includes an armed Walmart security officer shooting an armed thief.
Shooting looters is fine but there is a serious risk of innocents getting hit by stray bullets.

A friend of mine is in management for a big box chain. The corporation are very concerned about this trend.
They said they were losing over a million dollars per store in Winnipeg a few years ago.
They have started a thorough overhaul and lock up as much product as possible.

I was in Shopper's recently. A couple of sketchy meth head types came in with shopping bags and brazenly started stealing without even trying to hide it. I used to feel sorry for addicts but these meth heads are beyond pity.

We are headed towards an only online shopping model for expensive items from all the shoplifting going on.

Order product online and we will deliver for free anything above a certain price level.

The losses are rising at an alarming rate for the stores and they will figure out free delivery is cheaper in the long run.

I can see more retailers installing electric locks on their doors. Only let in real customers who might be buying something and then buzz them out.

Vancouver jewelry stores have had these for years after this type of theft.

Require entrants to take their mask off for the camera prior to entry may help discourage theft too.

Government masking requirements for entry prior to entering a business is making it harder to identify thieves and has created a wild west type of environment.
