This just plain pisses me off.The latest instance of this occured to me twice today. The first time was at a gas station when I purchased a pack of cigarettes.I was asked if I wanted to purchase a lighter. My response was "If I wanted to purchase a lighter I would have asked for that as well" to which I got no response. The second instance was when at just past 2PM I decided to hit 7-11 for a slurpee(the bonus was that lime was on tap) and when I paid for it the zombie wage slave asked me if I would like to buy a hot dog to which my response was "If I wanted a hot dog I would have asked for one as I cant get it myself" and the reply was "I am just doing my job and there is no need to be rude"My response was "yeah well dont pester customers with suggestive selling via the corporate mantra that has been brainwashed into you and your job will be easier".

How the fuck am I being rude by speaking up as a paying consumer and saying I dont want something that is offered to me when I did not ask for it?

Cripes I am sick to death of this practice and it seems the only way to fight back is to be verbally abusive when subjected to it so as to make the employees of establishments that enshrine this type of activity as standard doctrine decide to either revolt towards management in general because of public reaction or wake up and discover that people dont like being subject to suggestive selling like it is some kind of jedi mind trick that will cause them to buy something that they did not intend to buy.

The next person who asks me if I would like to buy 2 chocolate bars to get an extra air mile at 7 AM when I just stopped to buy cigarettes is going to get an earfull.

End of Rant.

I fucking, fucking hate this practice, too, but I am not going to fucking bark at the poor guy or girl getting min wage and who are told they have to do it or lose their job.

If it disturbs you ask when the manager's around and bitch to him/her, or better still, email corp HQ and tell them you're boycott their place until they stop it.

PS - the gas jockey doesn't set price of gasoline and ticket takers don't set the price of movies either.

I concur with this statement BIG TIME, don't shoot the messenger dude, shoot the person that has the ability to change things. 9 times out of 10 the regular staff have no control and are probably being watched on camera (esp 7/11 and the likes) and being hounded about WHY they're not trying to upsell. And MAYBE, just maybe if they're not upselling enough they might just lose their job, we don't know.

It is indeed VERY annoying and I feel the OP's "pain" if you will. But you gotta complain to the right people.

Trying having some fun with it. Give a silly answer such as the weather forecast or a baseball score, etc when asked these questions. Then watch the clerk's reaction. If you're offered food (i.e. hot dog), just tell the clerk that it gives you violent diarrhea. You'll kill yourself laughing as you leave.

Then you're not thinking about it hard enough, or indeed at all.
Yeah, I think you should carry around a stack of Jehovah's Witness pamphlets and the moment they start selling to you, you should give them a pamphlet and try to convert them. That'll teach them.

They are required to make the pitch, as part of their job. Sorry, but getting mad at the person making 10 bucks an hour for doing their job, which they hate (and they hate you even more BTW, especially when you are such a dick about something they have NO control over) is pretty stupid and entirely misdirected.

+2...I totally agree. The dude behind the till is just trying to keep his job and at least make a buck doing the most thankless job, pushing the merchandise, and saying the company mantra. How big of the OP to attack and verbally belittle someone who's lower on the totem pole than his believes he is.

Actually those people DO have control over it with regards to suggestive selling and I know as I was once a lowly 7-11 worker...at that time it was not a practice to suggestive sell but if it were I would not have done so regardless about management policy so as not to be a douchebag who pisses off customers.

I have boycotted many stores because of suggestive selling and whilst I have only encountered 1 SP who has done so I would boycott her as well......and this is NOT a rant about SP's that upcharge!

Personally I loathe and hate being pestered when making a purchase for something as trivial as a pack of gum to purchase something more....if I wanted that item it would be in front of me when I got to the register.

Bottom line is I hate suggestive selling.

I hear the mantra "Vote Liberal, Vote Fiscally Reliable!" and I want to puke, but I still don't yell at the dupes who spew that filth.

And they're paid big bucks.

Let the guys on minimum wage have a better night that that, eh? They don't need the abuse.

Then stop shopping at those places.

The loss of the sale of your pack of gum just could be the tipping point to bankruptcy.

Yeah and I dont need the mantra spewed out to me by a brainwashed sheep who has succumbed to the waterboarding of the corporation owned company he/she works for.....I dont want to be asked if I want to buy a bag of fucking hot dog buns to get an extra air mile or 3000 club zellers points if I buy a fucking widget/doodad that I did not intend to buy.

When I purchase something I have the most basic mindset as a consumer.Meaning that when I make a purchase I amking a specific purchase of something I want and to hear the drone of suggestive selling pisses me off....if I wanted all of the things I was offered they would be at the register and not out of reach or inconveniently out of the way which would slow down every other customer.

Storm, you need to calm down.

The retail worker is today's slave...they get abuse from every direction...customers,corporate stiffs, secret shoppers. They have to suggestive sell or they could lose their jobs.
When a homeless person approaches and asks for money you don't go ballistic on them if they don't verbally abuse or touch you etc.
When a flyer comes to your house you don't freak out.
When a charity asks for money you keep your head and either say yes or no thanks.
When you drive by a billboard you don't like you don't deface it.
When you visit a third world country you don't scream out loud to leave you alone or else.

The retail worker is basically crying for help...so go easy on them. Most don't want to be there because they have to deal with all walks of life...good and bad.

For such a beautiful place this city is so angry. On the roads, in the newspaper comments, in the malls, even here on perb. When you look around the world at the situations that people find themselves in, being offered a lighter with your pack of smokes is so incredibly small and trivial I find it hard to believe that the OP isn't just kidding us all.

His use of the word 'whilst' suggests that this isn't his home town. He has travelled some. I'd suggest a bit more. Maybe a stint in Mexico to learn how happy and relaxed people with almost nothing are, and some time in Japan to learn how people who do have affluence still can co-exist in harmony.
