The idea that trump is an alpha male is laughable. He’s a cowardly bully, that objectifies women.
Yes, that’s...the whole article...? That the idea of an alpha male is laughable because those are the traits common in people who identify as such. Did you read it?

Does anyone actually read articles anymore??? *screams into the void*

The premise of the article is deeply flawed in its definition of what the author deems as 'alpha'...he's just describing insecure/bully behavior. Many object to the 'alpha' label and morph that into today's femspeak of toxic masculinity, whereby having (unacceptable) male traits no longer fit within today's social order. Women are no longer 'bound' to their spouse/partner for resources/protection/etc. cuz they have their own ability to provide for themselves. This creates somewhat of a 'what do we need men for any way?' vacuum, leaving the male species grasping for whatever sliver of manhood they're allowed to exhibit...hence the preening, pea-cocking, strutting, etc.
Mother Nature will always prevail no matter how hard society tries to 'shame' her :)

I read the article. Their definition of alpha male is terrible. The term "alpha male" shouldn't never be used to describe Trump or PUAs. Narcissistic manipulators yes, alpha males.. hell no!!!!

Of course, using those traits to scoff off the concept of alpha male makes the idea seem like utter bullshit.

But, as I mentioned in another thread, alpha males do exist in the human dominance hierarchy. They're just really rare these days, an endangered species.

^^this is my short answer. I'll try to write a more detailed response soon...

I would think the definition, maybe the concept of the alpha has changed with the times. I mean is the alpha of the 1920's the same as the alpha in the 60's, the 90's, the '20's? I like the concept of the alpha wolf. When the pack moves, the alpha is at the back, making sure no one is left behind and nothing can harm the pack coming up from the back or the near sides. Firm leader but doesn't need to be an asshole to be one.

But diverging a bit from the overall topic, some of these so called alphas today really make me ashamed to be a man ...

I guess I have always had a different take on what an 'alpha male' is and the traits/behaviours that they exhibit, and to be honest women, attractiveness, intelligence and sex appeal never played into it - I also never use the term 'alpha male' in relation to 'beta male' or 'omega male', those terms aren't even in my lexicon.

Growing up, I spent an inordinate amount of time socializing and competing amongst males in exclusively all male environments. What I consider to be alpha males tended to be relatively physically powerful, but not always the most physically powerful, and also hyper competitive. They could be bullies, but that also wasn't a necessary trait. They would be less concerned about a threat from an obviously weaker opponent, but may dole out punishment as a warning to not try and challenge them. Most of their attention was directed towards knocking off their rivals and being dominant.

An example was when I had two male friends that I considered alphas, that hadn't met each other before, meet at a party. A simple game was played, once all other players had been eliminated and they were the final two, they just started to fight with each other, and it became an ultra-violent fight with objects used as weapons. We were seven years old.

Both those boys were naturally strong and athletic, but neither of them had success on sports teams, they would get cut because they would either challenge the coach or be disruptive to their teammates. Neither of them did well in school, both became more prone to ultra violence in adolescence and neither found conventional success in life or relationships. They are hard people to be around.

Today playing sports in my forties, I still commonly find players with these same personality traits on almost every team. Is there a better descriptive term to describe their personality type? Maybe but whenever the label 'alpha male' is used to describe these individuals everyone understands what you are talking about, which is kind of the purpose of language.

How I define an alpha male..

Honest
Trustworthy
Confident
Intelligent
Independent thinker
Opinionated yet open minded
Strong both physically and mentally
Fiercely protective over those he cares for
Provider
Successful, driven, highly career orientated
Exudes a powerful male energy... one that compliments and enhances the female energy, he doesn't stifle it
High testosterone level

Pay close attention to how he interacts with other men...does he stand his ground confidently, or does he run away and cower like a little bitch?

A real alpha male isn't afraid of strong, confident females.

Instead of trying to shove an uncomfortable, tacky, glass slipper onto a woman's foot, he will be busy giving advice and recommendations on the best hammer to buy so she can smash the glass ceiling herself.

I actually love a woman with a toolbelt, but want to add to the alpha male discussion and your good lists above. An Alpha Male is not sexist or misogynist or some who treats women like possessions.

Everyone has different labels for what it is and isn't, but at the end of the day it will be on a spectrum and people will fall somewhere in between.

Everyone associates it as a positive trait - but can you imagine if there were only alphas (by most of your definitions) in this world? Nothing would ever get done.

Nothing is without their merits.
