I'm having trouble with 3 and 8 (although I THINK 8 is Grissom from ST 3.) 3 totally baffles me.

I'm still waiting for some hardcore to point out you can't see Vulcan from Delta Vega :p
OK, just to prove my geek-dom, here is what all of those ships are:
1 - Klingon Bird of Prey (impossible to tell if it's a B'rel-class, or K'vort-class, or D12-class, since all have the same profile)
2 - Klingon D7-class battlecruiser (might possibly be a K't'inga-class, it's hard to tell since they have nearly identical profiles)
3 - Federation Nebula-class starship
4 - Ferengi D'kora-class Marauder
5 - Klingon Vor'cha-class Attack Cruiser
6 - Federation Excelsior-class starship
7 - Romulan D'deridex-class Warbird
8 - Federation Oberth-class starship
9 - Federation Galaxy-class starship
10 - Cardassian Galor-class cruiser (might possibly be Keldon-class, it's hard to tell since they have nearly identical profiles)
11 - Romulan Bird of Prey (AFAIK this particular type of ship has never been given a more specific class name than simply 'bird of prey')
12 - Federation Constitution-class starship

Dang, that's kind of sad.

Edit: almost forgot - if the Grissom is the ship destroyed by the bird of prey in ST3, then you're right about it being the same class as #8

Just in passing - DS9 in the center.

just saw it...

I thought the movie was outstanding!
I'm waiting to hear if the Tholian Council approves?
They did a great job!
- Except Chris Pine has too much the babyface to be Captain Kirk, but he did a great job.

Criticism:

- The Villains - rogue, embitteredRomulans - reminds me too much of the movie Star Trek, "Nemesis".

- What's with the galactic umbilical cord??

-Why do you need to drill to the center of a planet for a black hole to swallow it up?

- Chekov was never blonde. Maybe they'll be a sequel to explain that?

- How did the Grand Canyon (or whatever that was) ever end up in Iowa?

- Can we have a movie to explain how Sulu became gay? And do they have closets to come out of in that century?

Perhaps it was a man made trench/excavation to gather metals to make the starships or those huge towers you kinda saw in the back ground.

Strip mining.

There was a fence around it I suspect it was some sort of mining activity.

You're such an old Trekkie that you've forgotten how to spell Trekkie properly.

. . . then I guess I'm a weenie.

*************

For true Trekkies, who can remember the ONLY episode from the original series that didn't feature the famous opening monologue ("Space, the final frontier . . . ") as spoken by William Shatner?

the answer is the second pilot-where no man has gone before or if you count the first pilot-the cage

Great Movie

For all you hard core Star Trek fanatics who cannot comprehend a reboot of their beloved and dead franchise - get over it. It is a "new story" and things will be different. Sure - there were some stupid parts (Young Kirk driving the car off the cliff and not enough screen time with Kirk's bit titty girl) but overall - the story, characters and action scenes were brilliant. Much like how The Dark Knight and Batman Begins changed that franchise - this Star Trek movie will do the same. Besides - any movie that has Zoe Saldana . . . :D

- The Villains - rogue, embitteredRomulans - reminds me too much of the movie Star Trek, "Nemesis". Technically, I don't see Captain Nero so much a villain per se as a man who's trying to avenge the death of everyone on his planet.

- What's with the galactic umbilical cord?? It's a giant drill--remember, Nero is the captain of a Romulan MINING ship. He was off-planet (Romulus) on a mining expedition when he saw his home planet being engulfed by the supernova that Ambassador Spock was trying to destroy with a drop of red matter.

-Why do you need to drill to the center of a planet for a black hole to swallow it up? The red matter is HIGHLY concentrated. That's why only one tiny drop of red matter is required to create the black hole.

- Chekov was never blonde. Maybe they'll be a sequel to explain that? He dyed his hair blonde to attract more women. (Also, FYI, most women aren't blonde, either. They just dye their hair that colour to attract more attention.)

- How did the Grand Canyon (or whatever that was) ever end up in Iowa? How the hell should I know? Dammit, Jim, I'm a doctor, not a geologist!

- Can we have a movie to explain how Sulu became gay? And do they have closets to come out of in that century? Sulu was never gay. George Takei, the actor who portrayed Sulu, is gay.
LMAO response! Didn't know you had it inya. (Unless it was alien penis).

1) Ummm, to avenge something requires a wrong committed. Nero is a whacko seeking to place blame. Maybe he forgot to take his Ridolin, and it's not his fault he's the way he is?

2) You dodged the point. Red White or Maple Leaf matter, it matters not where a black hole is in relation to a planet to swallow. Even if Sulu does Dallas. The planet still swallows. It's a BLACK HOLE.

3) There is no third thing.

4) If the actor is gay, the character has to be. It's simple guilt by association, Quid pro quo. Fag pro quo.

5) Hubba said you are too a geologist!

Well, it depends on the mechanism the "red matter" uses to create the black hole, doesn't it? Since black holes are usually very massive (hence why they have so much gravity that nothing can escape from them), I think it's reasonable to assume that in order to create a singularity the "red matter" would need to collect a significant amount of mass. If you just place it on the surface of a world, it won't do that quickly (who knows, it could take years to collect enough mass that way). If you place it in the centre of a world, then the world's own gravity will be pressing the world's own mass onto the "red matter," thus allowing it to gain mass much more quickly until it reaches the point where it becomes a singularity, at which point it would no longer matter whether it was in the centre of the world or not. That was my assumption about why they were having to drill into the worlds.

I wouldn't go so far as to say brilliant. I think it got over-hyped somewhat. The movie was good, and as a whole the casting was excellent, but overall I didn't think it was nearly as good as everyone was saying. Much better than most of the ST movies, certainly. In fact, I'd say the only other ST movies that were as good (IMO of course) were 2 and 6. A very good reboot, but I wouldn't say brilliant.

That could very well be the stupidest statement I have ever read on PERB. So by your logic, Gandalf must be gay? What about Magneto? Doogie Howser?

Incredible...

Jeri Ryan rocks!

Wow, what a magnificant sight to behold. Now if only she'd lift her right arm a little higher.
