There's an old expression that close only counts in horseshoes, hand grenades&the drive-in movie.

It's hard to imagine a team getting closer, and not winning, than the San Antonio Spurs last night.
Up by 13 pts in 3rd quarter, losing the lead, then a late surge to be up by 5 with approx. 20 secs to play
and end up losing in OT

Shaq&Wade got their only 3-pointers in the dying secs to force OT.
If that young kid drains both free throws, its 96-92&done,but IF my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle, lol.

I don't follow NBA much so dunno if there's been other near-misses to compare to last night, but I can think of Cpl
World Series where defeat was snatched from the jaws of victory

2011 Texas Rangers were twice one strike away from championship, but St.Louis Cardinals prevailed
1986 Bosox were one out(maybe one strike?)away when THAT ground ball found Bill Buckner

2009 Grey Cup Alouettes miss FG on game's last play, get a do-over when Sask has too many men&win.
watching Riders going wild thinking they'd won, then seeing the disbelief, then agony was unforgettable.

NE Patriots came within approx. 30 secs of a championship to culminate a perfect season when some unknown
catches a pass with his helmet& leads to winning TD

these are off the top of my head,I'm sure sports fans can think of others.

another expression......so near and yet so far away.

btw, tho' I don't follow NBA closely, I think the pissy-cology of that defeat is gonna finish the Spurs.
I think the Heat will win game 7 convincingly(hope I'm wrong)

You forgot to mention the Leafs vs the Bruins in this years Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Jethro,I was referring to near-miss-championship games.

I agree the Leafs was as close as you can get to winning a series, but it was still Round One.

We can only wonder how the East would've played out had the Buds hung on?

Your right. I realized that as soon as I posted it.
Unfortunately I'm having problems with my account (or my computer) and lately I can't seem to use the "edit" function.

Anyway, I'm more than happy to remind all the Leaf fans any chance I get. ;)

Cheers
